maximum defense?

What is the maximum defense one can get on a char, is there a precise figure somewhere?
I mean the basic defense gained from items (STONE runeword and such...?)
And if being more specific - on a barb with the defense support from warcries?

Would be such a defense-oriented barb build viable for pvm? I mean if I really made defense my no.1 priority.

No it's not. Definitely not if it cramps your offense. Defense is only one part of the CTH formula (the other half being the level difference) and only affects some attacks (all elemental spells are not affected by defense), and the most dangerous non-boss monster in game (minions of destruction) ignore defense and block.

I have some screen shots with a very high defense paladin. Sadly I lost the thread that stated why he picked certain items.

obviously that build is not practical (since he can't repair his items) but it's a nice trophy

Any minion, even in normal, as everything maintains a 5% chance to hit.
