View Full Version : Are The Council Unqiues Ever Immune To Cold?
(Edit: The previous title to this thread was: "Are The Council Unqiues Ever Immune To Cold?" but the discussion has changed.)
And if so, how much Cold piercing would be necessary to pierce through it?
I know there were ways to figure this out, but I don't remember the specifics. :(
The why:
I'm considering putting together a gold finding character to supplement my gambling addiction, and I've always been in love with the Sorceress. I'm guessing that if I'm going for a max Frozen Orb with max Cold mastery, I could make short work of the Council with minimal +skills. My concern is when they show up with a cold immunity. I'm wondering if max Cold Mastery with minimal +skills will be enough cold piercing to cut through the Cold immune council. If it doesn't work I could always go to plan B. That is, grab the big gold piles that are there then promptly exit and start a new game.
If you're referring to hell, then Toorc Icefist in Trav will always be cold immune, at 108 cold resists. The other two have 33 cold resists, and if they spawn with cold enchanted then they'll also be cold immune (33 + 75 = 108). All 3 council members are capable of spawning with 2 extra modifiers in conjunction with their preset one, so it's possible they could get higher via another modifier (eg magic resistant, +40 cold resists), though I cannot remember the specifics off the top of the head.
Only lower resist and conviction can break an immunity, though the sorc's cold mastery can reduce it further if it is broken to below 100%. You'll need a level 4 conviction aura to break Toorc's immunity, as well as any of the others if they spawn with cold enchanted.
Only lower resist and conviction can break an immunity
Orphan,
D'oh, I forgot about that! :( I guess that nips that idea in the bud before it even started.
I don't want to spend too much money on this character, as the whole idea is to make this character a net positive character, so I won't be putting an infinity onto it.
Hmm, for pure Council gold farming, what do you think the best character would be? A Poison Necromancer? A FotH Paladin? Bear in mind I'm probably going to have minimal resists, so I prefer something that can cast spells from a distance, as well as I probably won't have a lot of fast cast either, so anything that requires fast cast rate to be effective may not be the best choice.

Barbarians are the most popular as the Find Item skill in effect increases all drops by 50%. For maximum speed you can even run the council at nightmare difficulty if your gear is not optimal as you can do much faster runs that way.
I personally run Hell council with a twinked Ice Amazon and most things drop quickly, except Toorc for whom I have my merc. (had I used a phys damaging bow or made a "Edge" bow in a better base item I could probably increase my speed against him aswell)

Toorc Icefist is always cold+fire immune (108%/120%), according to here (http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Toorc_Icefist). It also means that he cannot have any other immunity, as random immunities for bosses cannot lead to more than two of them.
I've had good luck gold finding with my gold find barb with a bonehew wielding merc and a straight summon necro, as these characters can be efficient and still wear tons of gold find equipment.
jakotaco & dragono,
I find it interesting that you suggested a Barbarian. I know Find Item is wondeful, but would a Baba in full Gold Find gear be able to survive the Council?
Also, I'm not going to do a Summoning Necro because I'm wanting to do these runs fast. Speed is the key here. Summoning Necros require too much start up time for this experiment.
I guess an Amazon using an Edge bow sounds useful, since I was going to use an Edge as a weapon swap for gambling anyways, but I'd hate to lose the Gold Find of an Ali-Baba... With that said, I'm veering towards a Conviction + FotH Paladin because of the survivability with a ranged attack. I can load up on the Gold Find and ignore resistances for the most part, while still attacking "safely" from range.
Barbs are easy, cheap and most effective

Well, it takes some gear for a goldfind barb to kill Hell Council quickly. But in nm even Ali Babas are enough. If you want to run Hell the a Warcry barb with a twinked up merc works is a solid option.

Just to clarify, my Amazon uses "Ice" Bow as it's main weapon. Huge goldfind and very nice modifiers. I just pick up "Edge" for gambling and sometimes for killing Cold Immunes.
stephan,
Thank you for that suggestion and link, but that specific type of Baba doesn't seem up my alley. The thought is appreciated, but I don't want to go that route. I prefer to be independant of my merc.
jakotaco,
Ahh, I see what you're getting at now. Thank you for pointing out the Gold Find on Ice. I'm from 1.08-.09, so I still don't have a lot of the "newer" runewords memorized, and I don't usually consider them. Perhaps a Multishot/Guided Arrow Amazon wielding Ice would work for my purposes. I'll look into this more. Thanks for your input.

Other barbs can be very effective at GF runs too - just about any barb, as a matter of fact.
Anyways, there's currently a tournament in the SPF for GF runs. It's single-player, and various participants have various amounts of wealth, but you might get some useful info out of it.
