Howdy all.
Just picked up the game a couple nights ago... have no clue what half of this stuff means but I think I'm learning? That said I'm trying to pick a class that will mesh well with my two friends as well as being able to solo decently. My two friends play a necro and druid. Thoughts for a class for me? Build?
A sorceress is always nice, as being able to teleport can both get you places quickly, and get you OUT of places quickly. I would suggest a Meteorb build as a starter.
My favorite starting build, however, is a trap assassin. With maxed Lightning Sentry (and its synergies), you will take down anything not Lightning Immune very quickly. A Death Sentry will wipe out a screen full of monsters once you get a body or two for it to explode. And maxed Fire Blast can take care of any Lighnint Immunes that show up. You'll have Burst of Speed to dart around with, Fade in case you have low resistances, and Claw Block can block things shields can't (think lighning.) Cloak of Shadows will keep your enemies blind, and you and your party safe. Best of all, the best claws in the game can be shopped for from an in town merchant, given a little patience. I was able to find some with +3 to traps and +3 to Lightning Sentry, for example.
Best advice I can give, after years of playing this game, is to just have fun and don't be too worried about making mistakes. Best of luck to you, and welcome to these forums!

Thanks for the advice :)
I started out with a paladin, just because I've always enjoyed that class in other games. Just started a..... FO/Nova? I think... sorceress heh.

Really it depends on the playstyle you're into. I'm typically a caster though sorcs have fallen out of favor with me once I could get my assassin to teleport.
Paladins are quite versatile and there are many variants. There's a few reasons why they're the most popular class in d2
Have a crack at a few different classes and you will find your preference. All classes are of varying degrees of usefulness in different situations. It's difficult to say any one class is really better than the other. However, I do tend to prefer sorcs, palys, javazons and barbs over others
And it depends on what your mates are playing. If you really want to make a killer combo that is.
Yet I agree with Noodle. Just go and have fun, don't spoil things by reading a guide. You never get the experience of a first time back.
P.S. One things to make sure is you have several elements to your - you and your friends - to your disposal.
