Hello all,
I've been planning to make a hammerdin. Today I found a superior heraldic shield with 12% enhanced defense and +35% resist all. I thought perhaps I should socket this (maybe double upp) and put a spirit in it. Would this be a suitable substitute for HoZ lategame?

so I would be getting 2 less points into combat skills, and 15% less fire resist. But 20% more cold, lightning, and poison resist. I'd also be getting the extra 25-35 fcr and 55 fhr. Blocking wont quite be as good though. Overall, how do you think these two compare?

Depends on the rest of your gear, but most likely yes, though you cannot up it. (If you believe you can, then you're welcome to share the information).

huh, i was under the impression that any white items could be upgraded, if they were not elite.

I believe you've made a mistake then as of the only public known upgrade valid items are rares and uniques. I must admit I once thought the same as you, though remember elite shields is mostly only used for the smite damage (the defense is often not worth the str investment), and as HS provides more than double as much smite damage in average as the best elite paladin shield for the typical hammerdin, then I'd guess it's not a problem for most people.

To answer the question about usability, for a PvM Hammerdin, a Spirit shield is better than a HoZ. Period.

Just make sure you have enough dex for max block.
