View Full Version : Playing my first smiter, want advice on gear/point allocation
Hey all, I've had a pally mule for a while that I've decided I want to turn into a smiter, but I've never played a pally before and I'm not sure about how to distribute my points, or what gear works best. Note that this will be a PvM smiter. The PvP scene in D2 has never held any interest for me.
In terms of gear so far I've got a few things that my frenzy barb doesn't use anymore as well as some other stuff I've held onto, so here's that list:
Gores
Dracs
Grief PB
AP Enigma
1x soj
Rare +2 pally skills/15 dex/19 energy amulet
I have the means to get basically anything, so you can suggest expensive stuff.
My main concern though is point allocation. I figure 20 points each in Smite/Holy Shield/Fanaticism, but even with prerequisites that leaves me a lot left to play with. And I'm not sure how I should go about distributing my stat points.
So yeah, any help would be great.
Keep gores, dracs and grief pb. Since it's pvm I'd only use the enigma for it's teleport and use a coh for a lovely chunk of resists or a fort if your resists aren't too big of and issue and just want more damage and defense. Get a guface helm and an up'd hoz and either a string of ears, dungos or t-gods for your belt. Rings go for raven frost and a dual leach stat ring for when you use zeal on mobs. Amulet I'd pick something Like maras but if your amulet has resistances on it then you can keep using that
Your focus should be on smite damage (up'd hoz), crushing blow (gores and guface) a source of life tap (dracs) and resists (your other gear) dr% is nice to have which is why I mentioned dungos and string but you can get away without it
With you left over skills I'd suggest either max defiance for more def or res lightning
Sorry if it's a little incoherent I'm rather tired.

PvM Uber Smiter
~~~~~~~~~~~
Str: Enough for gear after charms/other items
Dex: Enough for gear and 75% block with BO + Holy Shield
Vit: Pump rest points into this
Mana: We all know this is a useless stat, so none here
Helm: Guillame's Face with an Um Rune
Amulet: Mara's Kaleidoscope
Armor: AP CoH
Weapon: PB Grief
Shield: Exile for sure, HoZ is only for PvP, exile adds a lot of defense/life tap/+ other great mods
Gloves: Dracs
Boots: Gores
Belt: Dungos
Ring1: 20 Dex Ravenfrost
Ring2: Wisp projector
(* Ring choices is because when facing mephisto, res is more important than skill, and since meph's main element is lightning, u need a wisp, and also a raven for dex and cold res*)
On switch have a CTA + Pally Spirit shield
Skills
~~~~~~
20 Smite
20 Defiance
20 Fanaticism
20 Holy Shield
+1 to all prerequisites
+1 to all resist lightning/fire/cold skills for hidden res%
~I think salvation is pointless since you'll have a lot of res on you and the res skills
~I suggest you pump all the rest of skill points into either fire or light res, or both, because meph will hit mostly with lightning, or fire because you have a wisp/raven to protect from cold/light but not fire, so yeh..you dont need to put it on cold res since you have a raven, it absorbs and gives cold res and cannot be frozen
~You only really need fire res for Diablo, but after you take out meph with his lvl 20 Conviction aura on, you should be perfect n rape Diablo/Baal ez

oops double post..
Would you also recommend an exile for the 1pt smiter (aka fan/zealot) build?
Alright, I've done the leveling, gotten the gear, distributed my points, and here's what I'm looking like right now:
-Crown of Ages (2x Um rune)
-Dracs (14/9)
-Gores
-Verdungos (36/14)
-AP Enigma
-Raven Frost (20 dex)
-BK Ring (5ll)
-Mara's (27)
-Grief (39/343)
-EV Exile (+45 res all)
-Ptorch (17/10)
-Anni (11/20)
-6 BO CTA and Spirit Monarch on switch
My skill points went as follows:
20 Smite
20 Holy Shield
20 Defiance
20 Fanaticism
1 Resist Fire
1 Resist Lightning
1 Resist Cold
1 Salvation
A few to others like Vigor/Cleansing/Sanctuary
With some life scs I've had for a while, I can get my health just a little over 3k when I use CTA. Is this a good number?
Also, how much IAS do I need to hit the fastest possible attack speed? 39 from Grief seems pretty nice, but I'm assuming I can do better.

for pvp that is more than enough

A grief pb with the lowest ias roll and fanaticism will still easily hit the last ias break point.
