I just installed DII and LoD last night from the battle.net installer. I was able to play fine this morning on battle.net and but when I tried to log in a few minutes ago I got the error "unable to properly identify your application version." I tried logging on different servers and tried loading the game from both the desktop shortcut and from inside the start menu to no avail.

I looked online and found many answers but all of them pertained to people who had installed some sort of 3rd party software. I have no third party software anywhere on my computer.

thanks in advance.

I have the same issue after installing trough the battle.net installer on my laptop.
Yet I have no problems with the same installer on my desktop computer.

I have since re-installed the game 3 times. And have it working correctly now. I'm not 100% sure how I fixed it, but I'm 99% sure it was one of the following:

1. It was working good after you installed it because you chose to run it from the installer and not from the Diablo II shortcut.
2. Make a shortcut to the GAME.EXE instead and remove your Diablo II shortcut.
3. For the folder where you chose to install the game, set the security options for the folder to grant full access to your current logged on account (if this is not default). This will remove the vista confirmation message.
4. In your shortcut to GAME.EXE go to compatibility tab and check the box: disable desktop composition.
