have tried to get D2 to work on a virtual machine with win98se(guest OS win98 , host OS winXP) , tried both virtual PC and VMware
after ~half a minute ingame i get connection interrupted and end up in the create/join screen again
(im not dissconnected from server/no need to log in again)(it works fine with XP as guest OS)

anyone got an idea ?

I didn't think VM worked with D2 since the VM's video adapter is only 8MB. It doesn't use your real graphics card.

VMWare does work, but you should probably try using XP and see.
Im currently using XP and it's working perfectly smooth.
What are your computer specs?

the host computer is good enough , win XP/intel dual core/4 Gb ram/ 1 Gb nvidia9800gtx+

and D2 do work with VMware , maby your version isnt new enough

XP as guest OS works with D2 but i wanted to try something "lighter"

That is definitely enough to run D2 in XP smoothly, try using that.
Not too sure of 98, and not sure if any games actually run in that o.O

Ahh i was referring to Microsofts virtual machine. That one doesn't work very well.

VMware workstation 6.5 is the only version that fully support 128 MB 3D graphics. There is a trial version but the full version cost mucho dineros. This one works very well with Diablo 2.

got full version fo VMware 6.5 and it works very well with XP as both host and guest OS

I don't know about Win 98. But maybe if i knew why you want it to be 98 only i could figure out an alternative solution for you. You can minimize the XP installation to the point where you don't have to worry about requirements. If you are missing a windows XP CD to do the installation you can use your i386 windows folder to burn into a CD and run the install from there etc. There are other alternatives too. You don't need a second Windows XP key if you already have one. You are legally allowed to run two copies on your 1 PC.

i am currently running 4 virtual machines and wanted to try if it would run smoother with 98 (one instance of D2 on each)
have tried a "micro" version of XP but didnt find all drivers i needed^^

licenses is no problem , the company i work at has all i need
and i am allowed to test whatever i want how much i want

After installing Windows 98 did you install VMware tools from the 'VM' drop down menu?

You could try doing the same after installing a micro Win XP install.

I'm pretty sure doing it this way will install the latest drivers needed directly from VMware Workstation.

I'll throw in my opinion that Win98 is not a great choice for a guest OS; I can't think of any reason to use it except for legacy applications that refuse to run on a current OS.
