In case anyone was wondering the new battle.net appears to have been released and working on WOW servers . I dont have WOW so I cant confirm but I didnt see a thread for this and figured one was needed . Also the first Beta invites for SC2 are apparantly being sent out once registered for Bnet 2.0 . This all points to my theory that D2 will be a late 09 release or early 2010 .. Discuss ...

edit - I just setup my account and it's a fairly simple process that requires an email and password . If you are already registered with a Wow account I believe it is already converted . You can then type in your cd keys to register all your games ..

Hmmm...I take it this does absolutely nothing for us D2 players/WoW haters?

This reminds me of the last d2 patch, which did absolutely nothing for us except for people who damaged their cd or w/e.

Sigh.

I guess I could register my D2 game. The site looks pretty cool.

Entering your old CD keys into the new 2.0 accounts allows you to digitally download any of the games anytime should you need to. No worrying about old torn up CD's anymore.

Otherwise, yeah, you still use the old D2/WC/SC accounts for those games.

SC2 beta invite screenshot seems to be fake.

SC2 beta invite screenshot seems to be fake.

It has been confirmed to be fake by a Blizzard rep, but overall I really like the new battle.net. It doesn't do a lot of me aside from being a lot sleeker looking, but I can't say I am annoyed with the upgrade.

Ah didn't know that. Hadn't looked into it since I read it almost a day ago.

It seems to have a lot of the functionality of Steam... including the "redownload anything" feature and stuff like achievements that incorporate multiple Blizz games.

I have a defunct WoW account, but had no trouble adding it even though it's not active, and my D2 games. I'm not particularly interested in the SC2 beta but I have some friends that would trade me all kinds of favors were I to be lucky enough to get an invite... even a chance at their (hypothetical) D3 beta key, which I AM interested in ;) So I was glad to sign up.

Criticism

Since Microsoft popularized the business model of microtransactions[9], many people have criticized downloadable content as being too expensive, overpriced[10], and an incentive for developers to leave items out of the initial release[11]. Some criticism stems from the fact that many of the items sold on sites like Xbox Live Marketplace are not downloadable content at all, but are instead keys used to unlock content already on the game disk, people feel as if they are paying to unlock content they already purchased when they bought the game itself.[12]

Microsoft and Nintendo have been criticized for selling only specific amounts of their currency. For example: if someone wants to purchase a $15 item, they are forced to spend $20 just to buy enough currency to buy the $15 item.[10] Marketplace Points are not equivalent to any currency, however one Wii point is equal to one penny. Both companies have been criticized for taking advantage of currency parity, and keeping consumers from realizing the actual cost of items. Like Disney Dollars, the idea is that gamers will be more ready to spend a certain amount of "points" than a specific dollar amount.

Will the same happen to this new unified account ?

its seems like genre specific names might just fall out of trend

wonder if they will still limit to 25 friends like in bnet v 1.0(classic)

the immersion is taken up another notch if they allow the bnet 2.0 to function as an IM ap when you are not in any game

It's official that no beta invites have started, but I am unable to make a news item about it on StarcraftWire.net right now.

The advantages for older games is, as said, free downloads of your game. Future changes includes a single logon for all games on battle.net forums, and then you can choose what game you log on with.
