Does anyone know the best way to keep your character in game so the Mule gets perm'd?
It seems rather inconsistent. There are times when my mule will get kicked out of the game (for inactivity I suppose) after 10 minutes or so, and there are other times when my mule is still in the same game after parking him, going to work, and coming home (so....10+hours)

ya, no idea myself, the kicking of mules out of games is a new thing with patch 1.12
obviously blizzard got tired of having people makes games and take up the bandwidth or whatever by having their character sit in them for 2 hrs to get the status of renewal moved to the 90 days.
i have no idea the details of its working though. sorry i can't help on this matter, though i'm also interested in an answer like u !!

i was just re-reading your post and came up with a possible explanation:
bnet does kick people out of games for inactivity, however if other players join n leave...than there's activity and u aren't kicked out...
u should check to see if people joined constantly while u were gone for 10 hrs and than see if for 10 mins with no one joining, if u get kicked out.

I have actually heard methods of doing this. They include opening the chat thingy and leaving something typed there, while holding an item in your hand. Sounds a tad supersticious but it could work.

I usually perm my mules in games without password - I just make a level restriction, so that only characters level 1-10 can join - this way Im pretty sure that noone will kill diablo.
Then I proceed to call the game "free items" - low levels love to enter such games.
The third step is going out of town. I park the mule in a corner of blood more.
This seems to work, but I think it's caused by the fact that people leave and enter the game (or maybe because I kill few monsters when parking the mule in a corner). I think the servers treat the mules standing in "dangerous" areas differently than the ones standing in town - but it's just my theory.
There was actually a supposedly working metod that included clicking on the stash in such a way, that the mule would get stuck on Warriv (the mule would be running to the stash, but Warriv would block them), but Im not really sure how to reproduce it consistently and if it even works.

That got fixed. It was actually the campfire. You stand below the campfire and click your stash, and your char starts running in place because the campfire is blocking him.
Thanks Fledgeling, I'll have to try that method of yours.
it seems that since i've made it a habit to type /time, then leave the message log screen open, i haven't been kicked from games anymore when perming my mules. (pw games)
i used to just enter the game, then leave the mule standing where it was, and used to get kicked regularly.
