View Full Version : Wizard needs more epic offensive skills.

Apart from the defensive spells, I feel that the wizard is way too similar to the sorceress/druid in D2, charged bolt is a classic, but Frost Nova, Tornado, Blizzard, Hydra, Meteor Storm and Acid Cloud? Meh :scratchchin:

When Diablo 2 first came out, I was impressed with the array of new skills, especially with spells like frozen orb, hydra and thunderstorm :jig:

I think Blizzard needs to give the wizard more kick Yeah!!, something that would blow our asses like what they did with Diablo 2 :D

What about the on-demand nuclear explosions? Tornado is *****ing. And in case you missed it, acid cloud MELTS PEOPLE.

What are you smoking and where can I get some?
The wizard is the most blastastic class in D3 atm. Arcane Orb, Disintegrate etc...
If any class should get some boomlove it should be the WD.

I think it would be fantastic got some skills like Light/Darkness, turning to blind to enemies. And also magician enemies who cast it upon the characters too ocasionally!

Another good skills could be Spiderweb, Sleep, and also Flaming Hands or something like that.

Anyway, I like all almost all skills showed at this point, with 2 or 3 exceptions. I don't like the futurist style of some arcane skills, but I can live with them.

I can't wait to see Hydra.

Most of those would probably fall under WD flavor-wise, but the Light idea could be sick if in a radial Solar Flare/Gamma Ray Burst style (yummy fire/arcane damage).

I can't wait for Hydra either. That skill rocked.

Well we've only seen half the active skills for the WD when compared to the Wizard, so it still has room for some awesome spells. Hopefully we will be getting more active skills for all the classes. Like tier 5 and tier 6. Now I agree that the spells so far are pretty great, I'm hopping the highest few tier active skills will be larger and more epic.

LOL, no, hahaha. I don't know Forgotten Realms. But if you read some books, or play some books, you know they are very common spells in every fantasy world or book, like Magic Missile. I'm not surprised they were in Forgotten Realms, because as I said they are very common in almost every fantasy book/film/game.

Agreed. Wizards need spells which is destructive while the damage can be spread over a huge area.

One good example would be Black Hole. When Black Hole is casted. this spell sucks in any Wizard's enemies including bosses and enemy players into the hole causing them to vanish forever. Soft core characters sucked inside the black hole cannot be revived anymore.

We should also return Apocalypse from Diablo 1. When casted, Apocalypse can damage all Wizard's enemies within xxx radius including enemies hidden behind the wall. The damage type is special which cannot be resisted.

When Earthquake is casted, the Wizard can manipulate the earth in such a way that the there will be tremors and the enemies will be fall inside the earth. As such the enemies will be permanently dead and forever lost inside the earth. When eaten by earthquake, any soft core characters cannot be revived anymore..

Feel free to comment...

Don't forget, they haven't even released the NAMES of the level 20 skills yet. For all we know, Wizard could have something like Earthquake that damages all enemies and triggers all environmental traps, or something epic like that.

But I agree with most. At high levels with certain runes, some of the Wizard's currently known spells are going to be devastating.

I wished they wouldn't bring Hydra back though, it has been around since D1.

Something more epic should be used, like maybe summon a Balrog or Dijinn or something, hydras are so... overused :whistling:

Hydras are awesome dude, that was my favorite spell in D1, or whatever it was called then. I think the wizzard has her fair shair of epic abiliaties, desintigrate for one.

But why Hydra, again?

There are soooooo many other things the wizard can summon

Hydra is simply a classic which has also been embedded into the wizard/mage/sorceress lore. The pendant to Disintegrate, which is simply its icy frosty form is pretty blasting too!

I look forward to see some more spells.

I certainly hope it doesn't just shoot bolts of fire, but rather be a sort of fire base melee attacker or something.

Like a huge multihead beast thingy ripping the enemies apart with its teeth... Mmmm :p

More like Cerberus then! Sounds tempting though. Adding some form of melee attack to Hydra would be great!

No, what it need is MORE active skills. It seems the little handful we have are already famous. There just aren't enough of them. It's great that they're adding passives, but we need more actives to choose from.

Also I agree that we need more active skills. I've been hoping that there are 6 or so active skills for each class that we don't know about yet(of course we know less about the WD), but I doubt there is.

And why would such an overpowered spell make a return in D3?

Morever all you need to do is stand at one spot and spam the skill to damage everything in the screen. I see this more favorable as a Boss skill rather than a class skill.

MafiaRed
17-06-2009, 22:09
That would be too overpowered, in my opinion, and it would make it too easy to get though dungeons and defeat bosses; Thus, you beat the final boss by using this spell, and since you had sucked him/her into a black hole/tremor, you would possibly destroy the possibility for a sequel as well.

I watched a wizard video and OP is kinda right. Nothing seemed like it had any real impact. The little tornadoes looked very soft and fluffy and all the explosive spells felt like billows of gentle energy. What did look like it had some umph was the blue slicy attack.

For a moment I thought I saw a badass orbital attack spell but it turns out it was the level up effect.

I think that's just over the top... might as well make a spell that kills all the enemies in the game and be done with it.
The ideas are cute, the effects are over the top and unbalanced.
Creating a spell like "Black hole" and than giving it a medium or even high damage... it's silly, it makes little sense and really diminishes the concept of it- whilst giving it the effects you described would make the game simply pointless to the extreme.

I think that the Wizard has quite the array of spells, I love the fact that you need and can utilize tactics rather than simply cast the same damaging sprll over and over.

I do agree though that the animation for the tornado seems silly

I didn't like the concept of tornado returning, it just looks out of place. It's just too...druidish.

I guess what Blizzard wants the wizard to be is to specialize in weather spells as well as manipulate time and space.
Kinda like Storm + Jean Grey from X-Men lol :jig:

Jean Grey?

I think if anything they would be going for a Mr. Mxyzptlk, who just made all kinds of crazy crap happen. Like Myx, it doesn't seem like she has explicit weather controlling powers, she's just conjuring a tornado, because she can. That's the whole theme really, she's more of a reality warper than one who harnesses the elements.

Blizzard, meteor?

I did say "more of" and not "completely" didn't I?

Though I would not put down the possibility of her conjuring the effect of everything and not directly causing it to happen, if I'm explaining what I'm thinking properly. I haven't read any of the lore or anything though except for the "improbable age" introduction so I don't know if there's any explicit statements on this.

i love the wizard i really do but i just cant bring myself to like her, she has no fire spells, no ultimate ownage spells i.e frozen orb. the elecrocute seems to be a bit smooth and week. i know you will now slaughter me lol, but it does.

Here is what Blizzard replies to someone about the Wizard.

The wizard is a young and very arrogant student. Rightfully so in some ways as she is extremely gifted. She knows she's better than all of her classmates at mage-school, and even some of the teachers. Something as simple as elemental magic would probably be something the wizard considers beneath her. She focuses on high magics, arcane magic, the control of space and time, and while she does like to focus on weather based magics - she tends to put a slight arcane or unnatural spin on them. If she were to use fire, she wouldn't do it in such a pedestrian way as to literally conjure it herself. She'd want to make it a bit more challenging.

Fire is a physical element that the Witch Doctor uses a fair amount of though. His kit is a mixture of physical magic and the supernatural, which obviously fits very well with his name.

We want each class to feel unique, and a separation of visual style is important to basic gameplay, so there's some intentional guidelines as to how much skill types and styles should overlap between the classes

Really? I mean, I don't like her either, but how can you say she doesn't have Epic spells?
Meteor Storm? Mirror Image? Hydra? Wave of Force? F**king Slow Time?

D2 Frozen Orb and Fire Wall are nothing comapred to these, especially with the improved graphics and effects.

moves like frozen orb were nuking moves. there arnt any huge area effect spells meteor stor focuses on one place. and ther isnt any fire. i feel as if she was designed by blizzard, because they wanted lots of different spells and attacks. but really i like the powerful yet simple sorceress more. if the sorceress came out now in d3, which would you choose, her or the wizard.
