View Full Version : Artwork speculation
I don't really know much about it myself, but I love reading about lore! Unfortunately, because of the Diablo Drought, there are less and less subjects to talk about. What I haven't seen discussed as much, is the artwork and what it may imply for the game's story, plot and background. To kick it off, here is one: link (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/artwork.xml#25). What city could this be? What are the giant bodies lying there, big enough, so streets can be built across them?
Any theories welcome! Also all other official artwork welcome!

Wow, I had never seen that concept art. That is awesome, I DO hope that becomes an actual place in the game.
I'm guessing Ureh, city of the dead.
What worries me is that there are stairs leading into the glowing stuff.

@sedmeriah, have you read the books? you will like them, lots about nephalem ;)
tbh i recon it's probably just some dungeon somewhere with VERY ornate carvings and decoration. i do hope we get to play the game there too.
@ExtraCrispy, are you sure ureh is "the city of the dead" ?. I don't remember hearing anything about that.
there is alot of concept art involving sketches of angels. im rubbish with links but you probs all know what im talking bout.
Someone pointed out that one angel was standing on some sort of upturened sword, which is imperius' symbol. i think at the very least D3 will involve imperius and tyrael, inarius would be very cool also ;).
but damnit blizzard i want to here more about the other angels aswel!
That's some great piece of artwork!. Evidentely Blizzard doesn't need rotten corpses or gloom dungeons to create creepy places.

I remember reading that someone speculated that a character may be trying to bring 'Nephilim' to life. Nephilim are supposed to be the offspring of fallen angels and humans and are usually regarded as 'giants' or 'men of reknown' (source: to some extent, Genesis, but mostly the less-accepted Book of Enoch). Purportedly, they were destroyed in the Great Flood.
IIrc, Nephilim are an offspring of demons and angels in diablolore, thus beeing the "forefathers" of the characters we play.
Edit: Iow: Nephilim are non other but humans, though this term may be referring only to the ones deprieved of power by the worldstone, which now has been destroyed.

I've got another speculation. Is this Tristam (http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/artwork.xml#81)?

100% yes...
1) you can see the hill, that you can also see from where you pick your player and in the trailer where you see the meteor heading for the cathedral...
2) Hole in the roof of the cathedral...
must I go on :) what do you think?

I thought it was Tristram, just wanted to test you guys :P
Anyway the only "new" thing about Tristram I felt from this picture is that it's way bigger than I thought/remember.
But that's good because it supports my "not everyone from tristram died in D2" theory.

I am a little slow today, so could you explain to me how it supports your theory?
It is New Tristram, it makes sense that it would be bigger than "old" Tristram?

Hmm I might be slow today as well, but I think that this is old Tristram and not new Tristram.
Abd say about New Tristram:
The town is now comprised mostly of depressing shacks
So I am guessing that the houses surrounding the Cathedral belong to old Tristram.

So I am guessing that the houses surrounding the Cathedral belong to old Tristram.
That would be a valid assumption, but we need to think of two things about Old Tristram:
1) In DI, we had to walk a while before we got to the cathedral
2) In DII, the cathedral wasn't there at all
So, are the shacks immediately around the Cathedral old or New Tristram, technically they should be New Tristram. BUT the way I see it is:
New Tristram = Old Tristram, just with extra shacks in between the old and maybe a little expanded... New is also a relative term since New Tristram is all but a ghost town anyway, so much so that you would barely be able to distinguish between old and new, since everything is going to look run down...
...
must admit that while I did explore the burnt remains of the "old" Tristram, I lacked the intestinal fortitude to do much more than take a few hesitating steps within that infamous cathedral of legend.
Makes sense that what you said is probably true...
Originally simply a collection of merchants looking to profit on adventurers and travelers drawn by legends of riches within the old cathedral, it slowly set down roots and became an established town.
Makes me think that Old and New Tristram are entwined, difficult to distinguish...Some of New Tristram might be Old Tristram rebuilt...
Personally, we are discussing crumbs, while we are waiting for the bread to come out of the oven. :smug:
