View Full Version : Fire Enchanted Instant Death Bug
I have often heard the Fire Enchanted uniques are only extremely dangerous in Nightmare difficulty. I know that I have lost characters to them on Nightmare, and because of that I am way too afraid to go near them on Hell. Does anyone have the true information about this? Any referances?
Hell isn't a big a deal with FE as it is in Nightmare (as it's a game code thing on NM FE monsters), but it is still dangerous so max res, blocking and as much defence and life as possible is the way forward with melee or stand back and let the merc tank if you are ranged!

My Rule of thumb:
If it's FE and I'm not in normal, I back off and let merc/minions/ranged attack kill it.
They are less dangerous in Hell, nobody will argue with that. However, some of them still are dangerous... and sadly, you only find out which one was dangerous when you're looking at your deeds screen.

So my fears are not unwarranted. Thank you both. I suppose I may try to make a habit of using some sort of "Run Away" macro incase someone is depending on me as a tank and I need to run.

"Run away" macro? Do you mean as in a script?
No no! I mean like when you have a hotkey set up to tell your buddy "Run Away!" before I you leave his casting self alone to melee a hoard of monsters containing that unique.

Ahhhhh, sorry!! Terrible mis-understanding on my part.
I now have the Monty Python "Run away!!" clip playing in my head...
Yes, THAT's how I meant it. Since I typed that initial post on this thread, I have killed some Fire Enchanted uniques on Hell. Didn't do me bad at all.
In most games with other people they usually type 'fe' whenever a Fire Enchanted boss is there. In Normal FE monsters shouldn't kill you, in Nightmare there's a strong possibility of them killing you, in Hell the damage is nerfed but there's a higher possibility of other damage enhancing modifiers to be rolled.
Cursed(Amp) Fire Enchanted monsters are pretty dangerous when the monster has tons of life. Council, Hephasto and Radament come to mind. I've seen the first two take huge chunks of life out my my characters and someone else lost their brand new, geared out paladin to FE Radament(haha).
Two of my friends were questing together and were both slain by a FE Cursed Griswold.
CE FE Monsters will shoot out two FE explosions and to CE Novas when they die. Get amped and it's going to hurt.
FE LE types can release FE explosions when put into hit recovery. This makes me absolutely dread Act 2 Nightmare because all of the electric beetles are inherently LE, so all they need is an FE modifier and they'll hurt you.
Add in all three enchantments and it has the potential to do all sorts of pretty things.
The only thing I can really advise is to know your enemy and know yourself. Know just how hard you can push your character. If it's an untwinked bowazon you probably don't want to stand next to any of those, but if it's a CTA buffed, ultra twinked out Enigmadin then you can live through just about anything. Life, DR%, good resists; those are your best friends against all things FE.
The character I'd be concerned about is a completely decked out WW barbarian. He has over 4k life after prebuff, but I thought I'd heard that the Nightmare FE can cause thousands. I don't remember how much life my paladin had when I lost him, but yeah, that happened.

I almost died to a FE zombie a few minutes ago. I was running the NM Catacombs with my new classic orber (level 34) and was killing everything in sight with one or two orbs. I entered one of the side rooms and cast a couple orbs at a normal looking group of zombies . . . but then one of them instantaneously tele'd (or lagged . . . I'm leaning towards tele'd though . . . but didn't get to see the stats) right behind me, cursed me, and blew up . . . leaving my sorceress with none of her 370 life left showing in the bulb. Thankfully I had 80 fire resist on her (because as close calls go they don't come much closer than that). So, let's add Teleportation to the list of FE dangers!

Yes and congratulations for surviving that!

OT:
Play LoD.
I play LoD on HCL useast and uswest (and have an army of LoD NL HC characters on uswest). I play HCL Classic on useast. I have also been known to do a SP Tournament . . . I should probably just pick one realm/mode but have the most fun starting from the ground up (is ESU round 3 coming soon?)
The other posters are right; FE is lethally dangerous (even to characters with maximum resists and large numbers of life points) in Nightmare (it's some kind of bug, I once knew how it worked exactly but memory goes when you get old...), much less so in Hell (but even there, it still hurts if you are dealing with a high life monster like for example Hell Lister, there are many reports of insta-kills when FE Lister or Venatar die, particularly in games with a high player count that of course boosts monster life).
I'll give you a recent example -- just this afternoon, right off the Nightmare WSK2 waypoint on the way to Baal for the quest, my (then) Level 64 Wind Druid (over 1700 hit points with Oak Sage, 75% resist all in NM, 450+ damage absorb Cyclone Armor, ~50% block and some MDR) ran into a FE enchanted boss electro beetle (e.g. "Steel Scarab").
Being the nice paranoid guy that I am, I advanced cautiously, spamming tornadoes all the way, but I must have been on the bad end of 2 or 3 of the charged bolts that this beetle let out as his parting shot, and just for reference, I was at least a third of the screen away from the monster when it finally croaked.
800 hit points later...
So you figure, that was 800 damage, after 450 deducted for Cyclone Armor and after 75% Fire Resist, and it was only a couple of Charged Bolts.
You have been warned!!!
Cheers
