View Full Version : wizard skill look like star wars.

hear me out.
i watched the movie for the sorc-wizard and all of her skills for one tree look like a star wars gunfighter.
whats with the lazer beam skill wtf?. :yuck:
throwing stuff and shooting stuff is ok, but theres 2 much of this going into the new game.
its the same with the necro. it just wont float and is boring. im not that hard to please but those skills for that tree are pretty lame.
example. i got this rad "toss a burning coconut" skill, and it does a lot of damage.
but thats it....hears crickets.... those were called potions in D2. and hardly anyone uses them at all. even if these are an upgrade to those i see the same.
replace those skills seen in the video with something that dosent suck and has some actual orginality and imagination please. the slow time was fine, and others were pretty good though.
id like to see that crappy lazer beam skill replaced with something like a slowtime bubble shield, but instead of slowing time it reduces melee damage taken.
something better than a burning toss a coconut.
i think we need a help blizzard out with an ideas sticky here like the WD has from the looks of it.:grouphug:
I'd say her skills look more like D&D, which basically wrote the book on how mages/wizards are suppose to exist.
Personally the "lazar beam" looks fun and has some nice game play mechanics built into it. I think if you stay on a target longer the damage increase, and each pass through to another enemies results in less damage to that specific enemy.
Just how is your time shield going to function? A flat -X or -X% damage absorb?
The potion toss might seem lame, but it requires aiming, which promotes intelligent game play and can be modified with runes for some drastically different results.
:) Obviously, I really like their skill choices so far. If you want to see boring and uninspired, go check out the animations and functionality of Sacred 2 skills!
Mayby insted of "laser beam" call it "energy beam"? Sounds more apropriet to the game theme.

TBH, I don't like the laser-energy-w/e beam neither. It is too fake to be good, imho. But I won't die if it stays. I can live with that :P

how many of the orginal D2 people are working on D3?.
does anyone know?.

So you don't like it. Why do we need to know? It's amazing to me that people keep posting their little rants about how they aren't satisfied with one thing or another. People hated certain classes in D2. I hated Paladins a lot. I loved D2. Maybe you'll hate wizards in D3. It won't ruin the game for you.

the wizard looks incredible! they are doing a great job and the laser light show wizards put on are awesome
Ok im sorry Veteran player but seriously do more research and watch every freaking video and interview before posting cause i only see you whinning and crying in your post and that you are against a D3...and i seriously dont get why you should post if so...attention whore anyone?
seriously at least if you're gonna whine about something do like everyone and offer a good justification to it like everyone does with their own whinning...first of all its far from star wars...its not because there is a projectile that flash a little that its a beam shot from the death star.../rolleye
the whole spell are mostly exact copy of the D&D series of wiz spell...the "lazer beam" as you call it is actually a Disintegrate spell from D&D that destroy not only the character but also any armor or weapon they were carrying(doubt it will destroy the drop though, would be nice though)
also there is NO NECRO(sadly)...its another new class that use mostly old spell with new graphic and use pet as weapon....he is called the Witch Doctor(look at is locust spell video pretty neat animation on that)
the slowtime bubble shield already exist which actually prove you've done no research at all and actually just want to complain about something you didint research at all since its really really common to see that spell(Slow Time) in action
the only thing i would personaly complain about the wiz so far is that he is basicly an exact replica of the Wiz in D&D which doesnt really much effort to create when everything was already there to start with...but i love BG and NVWN and im a big fan of the D&D wiz so it will probly be my first char still :P...i just feel like there wasnt much work in is creation thats all

who says anything about whine lol?. far from it. im talking about the game since im a member here and been playing D for many years and discussing the new game. thanks.
also i did look at the sorc bubble thing. its for slow time not damage, like i made an example for. if theres one that reduces damage i might have overlooked it.
it was just an example of something better than that look at me i can stand in one spot and shoot a super soaker lamer skill.
anyways im not going to stop posting how i feel about the new game or opinons or things i want or would like to see in the new game because some think i whine or whatever. even if no one anwsers it dosent matter to me because im having fun. thats reason i come here.
in ending the super soaker stand and shoot skill i just didnt like very much. but i did like a lot of other skills shes got. just to show im not all whine.
Did you like "ray of frost"?
I like almost all wizzy spells showed, but I agree the "laser" is a bit out of place. It's a bit futurist for D3 IMO.
But I'm not a designer and I assume I won't like every skills there (I didn't like many in D2), then I'm fine with the game.
For me, the coconut is similar to assa shurikens too. I think the skill looks amazing in the witch doctor, and fits perfectly with his -debatable- role.

I could be wrong, but the description for the wizards temporal armor skill is: "Surrounds the wizard in a protective shell that stops all damage from an attack every 6 seconds. The shell dissipates after absorbing 12 attacks."
Sound suspiciously similar to your bubble that reduces damage.

And i should care what this 12 year old thinks because…?!?
“I don’t like blah, listen to me, my opinions are so valuable, blizzard stop it!”
Enlighten us some more plz, oh wise one.
Come on, people, we can manage to have a civilised discussion about the laser skill, can't we? My main beef with it is that I can't stop myself from thinking about Liero, when I see it. I agree that it's a bit futuristic for Diablo and I think it looks out of place in the videos we've seen. It probably is very fun to use though.
On the other hand, I loved every single other wizard skill I've seen so far, so no biggy for me, if the laser stays. The time buble is my favourite.

I personally see nothing wrong with the disintegrate spell. You say you want to replace it with something unique, but this skill itself seems quite unique. It has many characteristics that no other spells in the game have (less damage through multiple monsters, instantaneously casting to where mouse is pointed, dealing more damage to a single target over time possibly?). Ray of frost is the only spell announced so far that seems anything similar. So you want to replace this offensive spell with another armor type spell? Not too mention if you are complaining about "uniqueness" you proposed an idea based off a spell they already mentioned... Standing still while casting this spell makes the character at a disadvantage. Sure the spell looks supreme right now but that is just in the demos so far, and the game is far from finished.

Check out this player taken gameplay video and tell me Disintegrate isn't awesome.
Heretics.
The LAZER is the greatest thing about Diablo 3 Wizard by far. I wanted a skill like since forever.

Why does no one remember the single greatest addition to the game so far?
They're called SKILL RUNES.
They let you CUSTOMIZE your skills.
Like Slow Time that does damage.
Or Slow Time that lasts longer.
Or Slow Time that reduces damage inside it.
Or Slow Time that takes up a bigger area.
Seriously, veteran player, you need to grow up.

The laser beams and whatnot in Star Wars never made anyone blow up in a goretastic shower of goodies. Disintegrate does, and it is freaking sweet. Plus there are some epic cool moves in Star Wars, and sure there are a couple put in D3, but then again you could just say that the wizard is a guy who happens to be able to wield a sword and use magic abilities. If you tell me that that is too similar to a Jedi, I'll tell you that the Star Wars films made Han Solo look too much like John Wayne, and that the Jedi were too similar to the knights in the Idylls of the King, and that the Idylls of the King ripped off stories from the Bible, and that the Bible ripped off stories from ancient Sumeria, and that ancient Sumeria ripped off . . .
Who else is making a Jedi/Sith themed melee char for their first wizard?
I'm gonna be honest with you, i absolutely hate how it looks, i don't care it its an original skill in D&D or w/e, D&D has elves, Diablo shouldn't have elves and in the same vein Diablo shouldn't have freaking laserbeams. Diablo is based on Dark Age Europe, "laserbeams" do not fit in with the theme, "futuristic bubble shields" do not fit in with the theme. It looks completely out of place, it doesn't make me feel as if i'm in a middleage world where legends and magics and demons and angels are reality. I hope they rework their visuals.
So all the other magic fits, but a beam of energy doesn't? If a mage can shoot a ball of fire why not a beam of plasma/energy?
At last someone with some degree of belive, good one Telzen

Because a beam of energy is called "a laser".

Because a beam of energy is called "a laser".
I dunno, I'd only call it a laser if it originated from a gun.

"light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation"
That is a laser. A beam of energy is not a laser, it is simply, in this case, a concentrated heat beam.
Seems like it might be plasma to me. My question is what is Ray of Frost? And how does Meteor Storm work inside? But hey its magic.
Light is energy therefor it is a laser. The point isn't "is it possibly magical", the point is "does it look/sound/feel magical", the answer is "no".
Yep it look like Laser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Military_laser_experiment.jpg) :whistling:

And a poodle is a dog. Do I need to spell out the rest of that phrase?
And yes it seems pretty magical to me, what with the lack of equipment, a material source for the beam, and no need for massive generators to produce it.

It seems to me that what those who don't like this spell are displeased with is not the spell itself, but the graphics and maybe the name/description. They are not the same thing :)
They could have a spell with exactly the same mechanics and completely different graphics.
How about a stream of shiny lil particles? would that seem more "wizardy"? And call it "Arcane Ray" or something.
It seems like a fun spell to use. The eye candy is incidental.
Sigh, some people rather argue semantics then have an actual discussion.
And yes, it does look like a laser, just because you linked to a blue and thin one means nothing.

That's not a laser, that's a damn LED light called Laser Beam. And it doesn't look like Disintegrate in any reasonable way.
Yea whatever, you're wrong about it not being a laser, but thats not even the damn point. The point is it looks like a laser. And if you honestly can't see any reasonable likeness between the two then you need to go see an optician.

That is the source for your picture. It's from a New Zealand computer supply website, and clearly says LED in the description of the item, and the source for the picture.
The Wizard spell has a mass at the front from which the beam emanates, and pulses or flares along the edges at random intervals. Your pic is a glorified flashlight.
Dude Doppel just because its a red beam does not mean its a laser. Do you see that red mist floating around the beam? Yeah light can't do that.

Which one? Did you see what i did there?
Again, you're missing the point though, it looks like a laser else they wouldn't have named it "laser beam" now would they? I think its funny how you imply everyone thinking to themselves "Imma chargin mah..." or "Ka Me Ha..." the first time they saw disintigrate to simply be entirely wrong.
Also, keep denying to yourself you thought the exact same thing. Whatever floats your boat.

You watch too much TV...
Some people like it because it looks like a laser, others hate it because of that.
And others like it despite it looking like a laser.
Exactly what are we talking about again?
Oh right, one guy's opinions. So, uh, too bad mate. Guess you won't be using that spell then.
Just because it is or looks like a beam of light does not mean it's a laser per se..
That's all there is to it.
Move along please.

Oh right, and i'm just the one guy with the mere opinion that lasers don't fit in with the theme somehow, oh well, too bad, guess i won't be using that spell then.
sigh
Also those aren't lasers in dbz.
You're right Telzen, but some people just don't seem to get it.
Aw, burn, because i clearly remembered stating those were lasers in DBZ. NOT!
Sorry for not getting illiterate people though.

You say it looks like a laser. Then you say its funny to imply everyone thinking of "Ka Me Ha..." is wrong. You equate an attack in dbz to a laser. Especially when you put it with "Imma chargin mah..." laser.
I implied it to look like a laser, you implied that i claimed it to be a laser which was an utterly failed burn. Thanks for trying though, at least Kingu ate the bait.
They don't look like lasers either.
Sharing opinion with someone isn't getting their bait.
You're just blind for any argument exept yours Doppel.

I would really like it if the Wizard had powers and looked like the mage in this particular Order of the Stick comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0636.html)...
Granted, I can see it being overpowered, but the Wizard definitely should have rays - whether appearing like laz0rz or not.
You weren't sharing an opinion Kingu, you were in agreement "those weren't lasers" in DBZ, furthering this agreement stating "some people just don't get it", regardless of the fact that i never actually stated those to be lasers in DBZ.
Anyways, i think they look like lasers and although i love lasers i do not wish to see them in D3, the end. Now you can flail your arms wildly in the air, trying to argue semantics how those can't be considered lasers in any way, fact of the matter is that many people (who have no problem with them) call disintigrate "that laser beam", so tell all of them to be wrong for all i care.
Well i don't care how it looks like or how it is called in DBZ, because it's a cartoon, so you can watch it or not.
Why i don't like disintegrate being called laser is very simple:
1 it don't look like that in my eyes and i have provided a pic with thing i consider calling laser.
2 "Laser" don't belong to fantasy world but rather to sf. so it ruins my Role Playing feeling.
WOW a discussion about lasers?!:omg:

Laser Beam (disintegrate is the real name, I think) is the thing I'm most excited about! :) You have to remain stationary and the longer you remain, the more damage you do. It's just a cool idea that will create lots of unique situations inside the game (instead of spamming, spamming and spamming area damage skills). Plus it looks cool. That skill is the sole reason I'll play a wizard as my first character.

You sir are a moron...
First off the "necro" is a witch doctor and the "burning coconut" is not based off the potions as much as the assassin's fire blast ability... so much for you being a veteran...
Second off its not a freaking laser beam its disintegrate... thats pure arcane energy she's using to burn down the monsters... Just because you make stupid associations between it and a stupid star wars ship, doesn't mean that it needs to change...
Third off that slow time shield thing that you suggest already exists as one of the wizard skills in the conjuring tree... and its a rock shield... and theres also a temporal shield in the arcane tree but that does something different...
And finally, most people think that these are creative and imaginative abilities... I do at least... much better than the generic crap that goes into most other games... besides, there not really anything original in any sort of media nowadays... pretty much everythings been done before in one form or another... people will always end up copying something someone's already done because you'd have to go back thousands of years to find the original creator of this stuff... shut up and get over yourself...
You know, it really looks nothing like lasers from Star Wars... If anything it reminds me of phasers from Star Trek, what with the continuous beam and everything :-)
But anyway, does it really matter? If someone is looking only for "original" and never before seen material in Diablo 3, or ANYWHERE for that matter, will be highly disappointed on a regular basis. My humble recommendation for this most terrible affliction is to either get on with life or hit yourself over the head hard enough to forget everything you've ever seen in life...
True, it does look a hell-of-a-lot more like phasers from Star Trek.

Everyone has their opinion, and I don't get why some people think theirs are so much more important than the opinions of the game designers. If the D3 team thinks something should be in the game they're creating and someone says "That's not Diablo! Thats sci-fi! I don't like it!", why would the D3 team take the view, without recognizing that said thing could very well exist in the Diablo lore, which is ever-evolving, seriously?
I like Blizzard's focus on the game as a whole, but if they decide to do something I don't like (exaples: scrap the WD, rework the stat system, change disintegrate from the plasma ray look to something more akin to an element (which flies in the face of wizard lore), bring back Blessed Hammer, etc.) I don't expect Blizzard to change their view just because I throw a tantrum nor would I expect anyone who agrees with said changes to come over to "my side of thinking" because I try to explain how my view of the game is better than the views of the people who are making the game.
@Doppel: Make your 666th post a good one. ^_^
I only have one... simple, request here people and that is....
TO HAVE ZARDS WITH FRICKIN LAZOR BEAMS ATTATCHED TO THEIR HEADS!!!!!111
No skills reminded me of Star Wars. And now Star Wars being mentioned, none remind me still. Even if they did, I wouldn't really care. It looks fine, can't exactly say "cool" though, Disentegrate looks okay, but the idea is cool.
I generally like the lightshow, colors and explosions wizard makes. I think it's even intentionally made that way. But the skill i hate is disintegrate scifi laser. it should change into a lightning spark/beam. Imagine tessla effect
Magic missiles are ok but look a bit boring. if they seek/home into the target maybe they could arc/curve a bit from left or right side.
Tornado/Hurricane looks childishy, You should only see a very thin lower tip of the hurricane and top being mile high unseen by player. Maybe current models at dungeons/closed spaces.
Scorch Hellfire, you have no right to insult anyone on these boards.
Don't do it again.

I thought it looked suspiciously like Storm's Chain Lightning in X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which in turn I thought looked like a holdable chain lightning from Diablo. Which in turn is probably a stock spell.
