hi, i'm trying to start life as a single play multiplayer (i know, i know)

i'd like to know about some of your most positive mp experiences, specifically, what your idea of a good mp session is:thumbup:

theme-based adventures, regular questing, team MFing, dueling, getting rushed or rushing someone's char

..., anything really

input now, or... input later

PS: please?

Have to say the best part is accessibility. That you actually can´t just click a game and join sorts out a lot of the low-quality participants. Since ive only been doing this for a few days I have to say I already have some good experience. Most of my necro has been lvled from a1 norm to a2 nm in MP. As when I started to play him I´d just open a game and post it.

One thing that makes a good group session is, cant remember what its called, but at start there is a list of items that gives points. everyone moves out to collect as many of the items as possible. Usually the list ranges from Bolt of arrows to uniques. After a set time limit the winner is chosen. can be done in lots of version. From new chars to godly chars roaming whichever act they choose.

Ironman, and different skill/item restriction starting new char tournaments.

I´ll edit if I come up with more fun.

The best MP sessions I've been in have lots of banter/humour between the people in it

Baal runs are the vast majority of my MP experience

I've never seen any rushing in SPF, SPF members prefer to play the game imo

I find it stunningly enjoyable when you set up a group to play together. If you choose characters which complement each other, its brilliant to see the teamwork-related ownage which comes from it. Hardcore is my preference, because there is no challenge if you've got nothing to lose.

I tend to run in pairs with any of a handful of mates. I find that using voice chat helps with the fun too. Makes it less mundane for certain.

thank you for the replies!

i've considered them a bit and now i have several things to try out and see which one is the most enjoyable.

currently i've only tried regular questing...

@sorcererbob: you're suggestion sounds rly fun, although i don't know if i can take it :)

maybe the SC version... i die far too often to stupid lag spikes

I´d play HC more if I didnt have lag spikes as well. Brain lag though xD

lol I love brain lag. Kills more characters than the other sort of lag.

I've set up a regular Tuesday night session of D2, with Skype voice chat. Our group plays HC untwinked. Currently we're in A3NM with a Summonmancer, BlizzBaller, 2H Fan Pally, and I think another Pally is joining us. I've had some problems with my PC the last couple of weeks so we've had to postpone, but when it gets going it's fantastic, an amazing feeling.

IMO, questing is the place to have a laugh, and talk rubbish. Baal runs are usually too quick for banter, maybe one or two questions, at most. As LHTB said, my favourite MP sessions are those where everyone has fun doing it, and in my experience it makes Normal A1-2 much less of a chore.

Hope that helps.

I agree, questing can net some damn funny convos sometimes. Especially in NM because no one has to pay attention :D

The thing I love about the MP games here is that you can have something great drop (like a Windforce or a Stormlash) and people will actually stop, and start discussing who needs it most. And I've seen this happen multiple times!

None of that bnet pub game grabbiness.

Certainly since I MP less now. :p

On topic: the great thing about MP here is that people will discuss and chat. Especially the speed. I've been in a Bnet style rush on the SPF but it's not 'the norm'. If you need to get to Hell Baal then someone will help. If you want to quest slowly doing a full clear; it IS possible to find others.

Biggest issue is keeping a group together I think for multiple play sessions.

I totally agree, keeping the group together is a difficulty. Although establishing one night a week is a very good way to go about it. Weekends are nearly always out, because eventually someone will have something on. Weekdays are obviously out because people work and learn. So you're left with weekday nights, and you drastically ruin your chances of people joining by having more than one day to play on (twice as much chance they've got something on that day if you're playing 2 nights per week).

If you're a rabid D2 player, just make sure you've got other charactesr you can play when you're not MPing with your group!

also, another annoying factor is the time difference... it might be morning here, when it's evening there

The best way to have successful MP sessions is actually to together decide what the goal is and how its gonna be achieved before you start.
For those sessions that involves leveling together creating dedicated chars from scratch is also a good thing.

Would be cool to see MP tournaments. Like The peasant tournament, ironman or alike but with requirements on amount of players. Of course its always fun overcoming challenges without the competitive sides as well.

I did this a lot on B.net back in the days with my friends. You usually don´t need many rules/restrictions for a cool session.

-Untwinked
-Single-Pass
-No shop re-rolling(ofc you are allowed to check shops when buying pots or anything, but no constant rerolls)
-HC

There you go. Mediocre/Hard challenge depending on team setup. Myself I´ve always been fund of "weird rules" that adds a fun twist. Only 1 or 2 per rule set though.
