Hello people!

Starting on a personal project for fun.
I am going to illustrate each character class with their personal set.

I'm currently working on the Necromancer and Druid, which are my favorite characters..
Im pretty sure you know of Trang-Ouls Avatar.. but do you know the origin of the name behind it?
by lore we learn that Trang-Oul is the dragon upon which the world lies. He is worshiped by the necromancers, and in return grants them wisdom and magic enchantations.
In the game, if you have the complete set - your character turns into a monster-class called vampire, which looks more like a tall wraith-like creature. I will try to incorporate some dragon in the piece aswell.

Here's what I've got so far

And I need some help aswell!

I would very much appreciate if you could help me with the Aldur set :) .. I don't know anything about Aldur. Can't find any lore behind the set or the person.. I assume he's some kind of guardian, having a "stony gaze" and a "watchtower"
If anyone knows where I can find information about aldur, please send me a note.
cheers!

On to the druid. I'm going to sketch out all 7 characters before I render them.. it'll make it more fun ^^

I've chosen to depict him in with parts of the summoning-spell tree and shapeshifting-tree.
To the left you can see the carrion vine. It morphs into the werewolf, which in turn, morphs into the werebear, which morphs back into the most powerful of summons - grizzleybear.
They're all interlaced to show that they're a part of the druids abilities.

More work on the druid, and started working on the sorceress..

I'm going to depict all three elements, and try to give the piece the feeling of her being possesed by Tal-Rasha.

Very nice start. I will be keeping my eye on your progress, most definitely. Unfortunately, I know no D2 lore other than what I can look up on the Diablo wiki.

It agree, it looks great. You really catch the feeling of the chars imo.

I can't wait to see the Immortal King. By far my favourite set ^^

Thanks Delowyn, yea same here. But it doesn't really matter.. some artistic freedom, and making him orange, and hopefully people will know its the set :P

Thanks Fizh, I have some cool plans for IK ;)

That is one sick druid pic. :)

Phat Wolf - thanks man :)

Did some changes to the druidpiece, instead of having him standing still, I've made him walk towards us like the necromancer. That way, I can have him being occupied with his summoning, and still interact with us viewers by walking towards us. I felt the piece wasn't interesting enough.. nevermind his foot, it looks really crappy.. maybe it would look better with the other foot?
Also done with the sorceress sketch. Barbarian next I guess?.. ;)

Here's are loved barb. By wearing the immortal king I've chosen to have the spirit of Bul-Kathos follow the hero, aiding him in battle.

There are some elements I'm still uncertain of, especially the spirit behind him - I think the huge shoulderpads are a bit too much WoW, and also the weapon probably needs some change.
What do you think of the look?

Awesome! I'm impressed by how mighty he looks. Looks like he is about to smash me in the face!

I completely forgot to say something constructive :b . I think his armor is good (also the shoulderplates). He has to look big and heavy imo. The maul should maybe have a wider head (don't know if that makes sense though). The helm is perfect ^^

Wowo these are excellent. I really like the "sketchy" style you use. It's perfect for that possessed feeling. My favorite so far is the druid. By the way the footing is fine but I think the feet need for detail; so far it's just a solid line of color.

I think the shoulder pads on the barb are fine, he needs to look big and tough. Anyways, great job on these.

Fizh - thanks for the input! .. I made him wider, hopefully he'll look a bit more like a barb now. Havn't really worked on the weapon yet.

Goldenbird - Thankyou! I'll try to maintain the sketchy style when I start rendering them aswell.

Widened the barb a bit, he should look more bulky now :P what I'm worried about is the spirit of Bul-kathos.. might change him.. Trying to get that ghostly feeling that the necromancer has.

anyway, thanks for the encouragement and feedback people! :)

Amazing art, even though they're still sketchy.
Makes me wanna fill up my sketchbook. ^^

Mind showing more progress on the necromancer?
Its my favorite class. :D

The sorceress is looking awesome. lol

I really like your style. I've always found drawing on a tablet to be a bit bothersome for anything other than coloring. I probably just need to practice more.

What size tablet do you use?

DefiledVisions
21-02-2009, 12:42
Phatwolf - thank you! :)

Fallenchaos - haha thanks! gogo work that sketchbook.. ^^ I'm sorry but there's no progress on the necromancer yet. He is the first one I'll finnish though - so hang in there!

Tragedian - Oh yes, practice is the key I think.. and motivation. Actually tablet nor size doesn't really matter.
I'm using a wacom intuos2, old model.. it doesn't have the new technology the intuos3 series has, but still works fine. It's an A4 size, and imo, too big - but I got it cheap. A5 is probably the best size, since it doesn't take nearly half as much space, and you still have lots of area to draw on.
If you want to know more about digital painting, just ask. I'll try to help out.

Thank you for the encouragement guys!

Question, how long have you been painting/drawing in photoshop? and..Do you have a devianart account? :3

Sorry for the absence.. have been busy with school and a crappy part-time job I just got.

Won't update often anymore.. anyway, Here's the Amazon.

I was thinking of M'avina.. no idea who that is, I assume she's some great amazon warrior. But I didn't want to incorporate her the way the barbarian has Bul'Kathos.. so I'll leave it up to you, M'avina could be the valkyrie? .. or maybe not ;)

Just read through all of your entries in this post.
The pics are coming along great, your ability to pose them and depict things "flowing" (The elements, robes and such) really brings life to the characters. Great job so far.
I really look forward to following this piece. By the way, are you planning on keeping these separate pieces? Or are you going to collaborate them all at the end?

As a side note, though you most likely are already doing this, I highly recommend you do these pieces at a very generous resolution (I'd say 2500res or up). There is never any harm in having things be a little high-res, because a higher-res image doesn't always mean you have to put more time/detail in, it just helps preserve the image in all of its glory. If you haven't been doing so, now is a good time to bring them up while you're still just inking things in.

Also, if you haven't already I recommend cracking open some of the Diablo books (especially the first 3). They really help you get into the world and lore of Sanctuary and its inhabitants.

Sorry if I came off kind of rant-like. I guess I just get this way when I'm excited about something :)

That's some awesome sketches, I'm very anxious to see you go into further details with them =D

Love-love-love the Barbarian btw!

And, OH! Swede-power ;)

Loving the art, its pretty bad @$$!...

Also don't worry about the barb's shoulders, while WoW's style is definitely more over the top compared to SC or Diablo, Blizzard's art style in general is exagerated... big armor and weapons are a good thing imo... stylized is much better/more interesting than purely realistic art...

But yeah would love to see more on the necromancer piece as he is also my favorite class...

P.S. You should definitely consider submitting these to Blizzard for their fan art gallery when you are finished... There has been hardly any Diablo art posted on it, mostly just warcraft and starcraft stuff...

DefiledVisions

GavinUnit - Thanks! I've planned on them as seperate pieces, might make a wallpaper with all of them combined though.
Oh and no worries, These are sized down to 25% of the original size.. I work at 2000 pixels with these.. My stoneage computer can't handle any bigger without lagging, which sucks, really need a new one :D

Which books do you mean? The one's by Richard A. Knaak? and no, you're not ranting. It's a solid and honest crit.

Leord - Thank you! Barb's my favorite so far aswell ;) ha det bra!

Scorch Hellfire - Thanks alot! I wil submit them when I have finnished them. I also felt there's been too little Diablo fan-art for too long time.. and watching all these manga-esque WoW pics is tiresome.. haha.

Holy crap! First page and stuff? didn't expect that. Thank you! .. now I have to shape up a bit I feel.. but I'm sorry to say that I have exams and stuff coming up, so this might not be finnished until summer. Who knows..

Anyway, here's more work on Amazon. This is the piece I'm least happy about right now. Hopefully it'll turn out good.

That's actually pretty badass. I'm more into Javs with Fury than bows, but either way it still really captures the feel of the character. The posing of the characters, especially the Zon, makes me think of a move poster. I love it!

And yes, I was referring to Knaak. I love the books up to Moon of the Spider. After that tho, I just can't get into them for some reason :(

Leord - neither can I!

GavinUnit - I havn't read any of Knaak's books. However I'm really keen on looking into them.. read a short pasrt of the newest one I think.. and it was really cool.

Beckatitis - thank you! lol, I luuurve the Zon too :P

Goldenbird - Thank you very much!

FallenChaos - Yea they really take free time..

Azymn - Thank you sir! I'm using photoshop cs3 and hardware is wacom intuos2, an old modell. I hope to lay hands on Intuos4 during the summer.. it has 4 times the pressuresensitivity! I can't imagine the control I'll achieve..

Wow.. I'm really happy to hear all the immense response from you people! really wants me to finnish this asap! To sum up my life shortly.. during march I worked at my job, and quit in the beginning of April. I'm currently a lastyear student in the swedish equivalent of highschool, and we have lots of exams and tests coming up so I had to quit to be able to focus on school.

I go an art education, and my final project was illustrating a book, which I've been doing these past weeks. We also have an art exhibition in two weeks, and I have a dance project this week (no im not ghay, im just cool and in touch with my femininie side ;))
Besides that Im into 2 art competitions and applying for artschools.
So these coming weeks my spare time will fully focus on finnishing my paintings, building a portfolio that I can send to schools, finnish the two competitions.. and inbetween, the Diablo art.
Hopefully I'll get started again next week.

Thanks again for all the feedback and support. And thank you for being patient with a lazy *** like me..

this is all way cool. I've been doing off and on digital art for for about a year and a half now and definitely have respect for how long these paintings take. Keep up the good work.

One thing i would say, just from a quick glance and not really knowing what you are shooting for, is to revaluate your posing of the characters to make them more dynamic. Your coloring is great and your initial sketches are all awesome, but i just don't see a lot of action conveyed in these pics, more so in the barb and zon than in the others. I'd try giving them a more open stance than the casters, but just my opinion.

My personal fav is the sorc for sure. besides her being my favorite character, i really like how she appears to be floating, very sorc like.

Let me know what you think of the Intuous4...I have a Bamboo that I tinker around with and it's a great piece of hardware, but I'm starting to appreciate the advantages of the Intuous line.

Death_of_Angels - Thanks! Now that you mention it you're right! I have an idea on how to make the barb much more dynamic without changing too much.. will post a paint-over when I have time.

Azymn - From what I have seen, it brings digital painting to a whole other level when it comes to customizing the experience and giving the artist control over the process. If you havn't seen the introduction movie you really should, it's really.. "omg I need one, now"
