View Full Version : You can play single player on battle.net?
I decided to click on "other multiplayer" and clicked on the battle.net button, only to discover that my single player characters were on the screen! I have never played D2 this way and worry that my atma stash would get messed up, so I didn't proceed to try out a character.
so how exactly does this work? Does my single player toon get copied onto the "open battle.net?"
can I make ladder runewords without using the patch if I were playing on "open battle.net"?
what are the pro's and con's of playing in "open battle.net"
thanks in advance!
You can play on Open Battle.net, not the closed realms. Your SP characters are stored locally on your hard drive.
You might want to look into the Single Player Forum's stickies for some info on the subject as it's not really my area of expertise. Thy will know as well as Mursillis I think, and several of the SP'rs.

Do NOT use open battle.net. It is a wasteland of hackers, cheats, and impossible items. If you venture on there and play with ANYONE you're considered "tainted" and will be unable to multiplay or trade with any other singleplayers.
If you want to multiplay with your SP characters, use TCP/IP and check out the MP Forum for the SPF (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=119).
You still need the Rune Word Mod to make the new runewords.

- Open b.net > using saved characters from your PC (single player) and these cannot use ladder runewords and other stuff because you do not connect to the b.net servers directly
- Closed b.net > using saved characters from the b.net servers, cannot use your single player chars, you need to create new chars which stay on the servers and cannot be modified and you also have the option of playing on the ladder.
Most people play closed b.net because there's more stuff you can get and there's a less chance of having some hacked items. Open b.net is actually for those you who just want to be godly all the time. Take no offense to this because most newbies are not sure what is Closed B.net or are scared to try it.
Take my advice, go create a Closed b.net account!
Yes you'll be starting from scratch but if you asked kindly around for help such as items and such, you might very well get some help and some might even help you level up or rush you to help you level up much faster.
Hope this helps!
My advice would be to stick with Single Player. Only way to avoid dupes, lag, bots, realm down, and hacks. Easy muling with ATMA or GoMule, and you get to keep or reroll your maps at will for efficient magic finding. I used to play on the closed realms, but have never regretted my move to SP.
Thanks for all the input!
@ Hawklord & Noodle - I actually spend the majority of my time playing on closed battle.net. I just wasn't sure what the open battle.net is all about
One thing I never really liked in single player is waiting for the rune you want to pop up. In US West, all I have to do is trade or do a couple of rushes here and there...although the spam really is annoying
It's about dinkleweeds who have neither the common sense to play SP nor the patience to mule on Bnet. :p

No problem, I do play Sp as well but only with my 6 yrs son through TCP/IP. He loves playing his Necro with the skelies. He has no nightwares yet, j/k lol
