View Full Version : Double swing faster than Frenzy?

I know that both skills should have the same max attack speed (5 fps) and this is the case if I use them each directly.

However, I noticed that if I "pre-boost" my attack speed with Frenzy first and then switch to Double Swing, then my attack speed with the latter is noticeably faster than with the former. I'm sure I didn't see it wrong.

Without such "pre-boost" though, both skills have the same speed.

So can Double Swing actually go faster than 5 fps with Frenzy as its speed booster?

No, it can't. Are you sure your double swing is already at max speed?

Yes. 2 Phase Blades. The primary one "Grief" gives 35% IAS with a weapon base speed of -30. Double swing reaches 5 fps automatically with 2 phase blades according to the weapon speed calculator. Frenzy also does if the primary weapon (in this case, Grief), has at least 4% ias with a lvl 20 frenzy (my frenzy level is 30 while my primary weapon has 35% ias).

You need a total of 39% IAS with a level 20 frenzy, so an additional 4 on top of your Grief.

In any case are you comparing a fully charged Frenzy with double swing? With a level 30 Frenzy you would at least need 24 hits (you reach 5 fpa with a level 24 Frenzy and 35 IAS) to reach max speed.

So my Barbarian needs to land 24 successive hits on monsters to reach 5 fps with Frenzy? I had always thought 6-7 hits would be enough.

Yes he does. The attack and run speed bonus increases 1 level per hit, starting at level 0 and maxing out on your current level of Frenzy.

Wouldn't my barb need 30 hits then because my Frenzy level is 30? And that's pretty bad considering how the skill's speed bonus only lasts a few more seconds after he stops attacking.

Well between 24-30 your attack speed doesn't increase anymore. And yes, if you look at it objectively, Frenzy's advantage over double swing is not that big.

It is pretty unfair considering how Zeal and Fury start off at their fastest speed immediately if you have enough overall ias while frenzy needs 24 hits to build up and doesn't even last that long. But oh well that's just life I guess.

Thanks for the clarifications.

Not only that, but at their fastest speed Fury and Zeal are actually faster than 5 fpa on average, and you can still use a shield with them on top of that. The only advantage of frenzy is that you can get a lot of different mods from two weapons.

Double swing gets a 50% automatic ias boost. This is good for a frenzier in cases where you get decrepified, or holy frozen, or both, by staying charged up with frenzy then using double swing.

is it actually beneficial to charge up with frenzy and use double swing after a few hits, if you have both at 20 points? (under normal circumstances, not slowed)

Only if you are seriously ias-deficient. If so then its time to reconsider your build structuring imo, no offence intended.

Well my frenzy barb's speed still doesn't feel right... even though I'm absolutely sure that he has more than enough ias and the proper right-hand weapon to reach max speed.

Anyone has a frenzy barb they can show me in game? I want to see how fast your barb is when he hits 5 fps with frenzy.
