Recently a friend gave me 2 soj's and an arm of king leoric. I am nervous to use them because I fear they are dupes? What do you all purists do with trading and gifts arent you afraid they could be dupes?

Earlier this ladder a friend who was quitting D2 offered me open-ended use of his characters and gear (really good stuff such as a fully geared auradin, hammerdin, summoner, lightning sorc, and so much more). I passed, but not really because the high-end gear was clearly not “legit”. I passed because the point of the game (to me) is killing monsters to find better gear, to create better characters to kill better monsters to get even better gear to create even better characters to kill even better monsters (and on, and on, and on it goes, much like that sentence). So clearly playing with self found gear is what makes me happy. The real question seems to be, what makes you happy?

(P.S. Anything could be duped, but I would guess the Arm of King Leoric is the real deal).

Purists? Are there any of those left around here?

I don't think sojs get duped these days. I could be wrong, of course.) There's a much higher chance that they were acquired through ill means - botting.

I don't find sojs terribly appealing. I trade them away for stuff I like.

Who cares?

I mean seriously, who cares?

Clearly you do, because you're asking, so that must mean that you don't agree with using the free items... so don't use them.

If you're going to play on b.net you're going to get into shady items, duped, or botted, etc... choose now, or forever hold your peace.

99% of the items in this game just aren't worth duping, an AOKL would fit into this category. I trade very little, the only item of significance I have traded for this season was an anni, a 10/10/6 anni, one off from perfect. No one would dupe something like that.

More often, I beg stuff off friends and give friends stuff, without regard about how "valuable" said stuff is. Go ahead and use your friends stuff.

Edit: I misread

The duping nonsense is why I almost never trade.

As another responder pointed out, D2 is in part a huge scavenger hunt, with "he who dies with the most stuff, wins" (well, OK, maybe in Hardcore I'd leave out the "...dies..." part).

If you are bedecking your characters in traded gear that almost certainly wasn't legitimately found or created, then IMO you are kind of evading the purpose of the game... maybe it makes sense for PVP, in which if you don't have all "1337" gear you don't have a chance, but for PVM, I could never see the point of it.

It's only a game, whatever makes it fun for you, who am I to say. All I ask is that (unlike 99.99999% of the TPPKers) you not use this wonderful "leet" gear to PK people who get their gear the old-fashioned way.

Cheers

Mr. Bill

That is my life quote :D "He who has the most in the end wins"

Runes and things to put them in are the big duped items these days. The much more pervasive activity is botting tho. The only way to know absolutely 100% for certain that everything you have is legit is to only use things that you, yourself find (assuming that you are 100% legit as well).

Not sure I can offer you any advice, Change Thrower - I only play with buddies and self-found stuff. Which means we have jack squat (our highest rune is a single "Gul" ^^). However as mentioned, playing with incredibly powerful freebies is cheating yourself out of the game experience. Be they legit or not :).
