Max sockets only?

Ok. I play D2Lod(Desktop only,no online) with the latest patch and i do use the Atma to mule. I found since I got patched. That when I use my reward to socket an Item. That no matter how many times I do it. I only get the max allowed sockets.

Meaning I allways get 6 sockets on a phase sword. But, there's no way to get 2-5 sockets, so that I can make something like an HoJ on it.

Dang! All those cool superior/etheral items I've set aside are useless for 99% of what I planned on.

There's another way to add sockets, and they are random, using cube to do that. See the cube recipes at http://battle.net/diablo2exp/items/cube.shtml

Item level and item quality determine how many sockets the itme can get.

A normal weapon (or ethereal) found in hell will get max sockets from the socketing quest.

Item levels are in one of 3 groups: 1-25, 26-40, and 41 or higher.

Use Atma to look at the ilevel of the item.

You're using Lazruk's socket quest. He always adds the max sockets allowed to an item. If you want less than the max, you'll have to use the cube receipe and take a chance, as someone mentioned above.

the larzuk quest won't always add max sockets..., two possible sockets in that magic hammer, for example, would be nice, but he gives you only one...

because you slayed the wrong monster at the wrong time for it, or you shopped it at a slightly off level from Halbu

If the hammer is a yellow,green, or gold lettering. I believe the max is only one socket, period. Blues and whites you can get max allowed for said item.

But, I specifically remember that I used to get a random amount on the whites,back when I first played d2lod. But, since I started again after hearing about the patch and stuff. It's max only on the whites.

the arreat summit says it's based on level (monster/item lvl), every item I found late into the game got max sockets though...

i believe the max number of sockets on any blue (magic) item is 2, if you add sockets... and a magic item can get a maximum of 4 sockets, if it gets the jeweler's prefix... sometimes you only get 1, though

True, blue item can get 2 sockets from Larzuk if you're lucky, sometimes it's only one.

Larzuk always gives the maximum number of sockets to a white item.

The Arreat Summit (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/weaponsandarmor.shtml#elite) gives the maximum number of sockets per item. However it is dependent on the ilvl of the item itself whether it can have the same number of sockets as described on the Arreat Summit. For example if your normalize a cracked Archon Plate it won't get 4 sockets, but 3 instead. Also, where the item dropped is important.

Note: unique/champion/minion monsters have higher mlvl which could increase the ilvl

Magical (blue) always have a 50/50 chance of getting 1-2 sockets. Rares, sets and uniques always get one.
