As some of you probably know, last week (around this time actually), my PC froze as I was teleporting through the throne room. The result was the death of Hps_Sparkyspark.
She was my goal since the beginning of this season. I've always wanted to make a really nice lightning sorc. It's impossible in SP because of the infinity/rune issue. She was difficult for me even on b.net because I hate trading, and trading was required, but I wanted to make her, so I closed my eyes and jumped in.
I'm not much of a skill/stat planner either (though I'm getting better), but I forced myself to do it with Sparkyspark. I sat down with pen and paper and figured out all the numbers with gear, etc.
She was a beast. Just awesome. I loved playing her, enjoyed it very much. My record was 95 (SP sorc) and I managed to run SparkySpark up to 96 and 1/4 (my new record) before the poopy PC crash happened - a technicality that I don't much care for, but have tried very hard not to complain about.
I spent the last week rebuilding her. Trading madly, calling in some favours, and just generally abusing my /f list (thank you all). Her replacement was a shell... just a piece of crap... compared to her former self. The difference was mostly charms, but a few items weren't quite up to spec also.
I played the replacement hard. Demanding that she do the things Sparkyspark could do, despite the fact that she was far far inferior... She is now dead also (100% my fault this time... oops!)
I have no interest in rebuilding her again... none at all. I have something like 20 unfinished Single Player characters, and I'm going to go have a stab at them.
So I guess essentially, this is my b.net retiring thread (for anyone who cares). Perhaps it's a bit long winded... but I like to type. I will still be forum active, and will keep my b.net accounts alive also, but no more mad late night baal runs, etc.
@Myk: Your Thresher is clamped in the cold, dead hands of Waheed somewhere near hell Andy... perhaps you can find it there again, maybe the runes will pop out unexpectedly also! :alright:
@Shaharris: I will return your Griffons to you next time I spot you online. The socket has changed, but I will put it back to the way it was if you so desire.
@others: Expect to see Project Profit (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=572927) finally come to an end, either via Guardian or death.

You know this retirement will only last until I start to play again.

Edit: You and marth can start a club now! I think I can sum up most of my feelings in one word : Apathy.
I don't blame you for having the wind knocked out of you, that's one H of a disappointment, especially having run the character up to that high a level.
I remember something very similar happening to me back in the 1.09 days, I had a (as I recall) Level 83 or so Summoner Necro walk down the stairs from Frigid Highlands, on the way to deal with Shenk after whacking Eldrich, the way my Necro had done scores of times before, with hardly a scratch. Got to a few steps past the end of the stairs and then my PC hung (this was in my late, unlamented Window$ XP days, before I saw the light and made the Ubuntu Linux switch ). Why did it hang? You tell me. That kind of stuff just happens, when you run Window$, it's a bit like expecting a hailstorm, it doesn't come every month but trust me, it will come, sooner or later. :yuck:
Had a full army of ~30 minions in front of me, was at full health, no ranged attackers against me, almost max resists, ~800 or so hit points. Had full Trang's set on.
By the time the PC rebooted -- at least 5 minutes later, as you know Window$ typically takes an eternity to start up -- and I was able to restart D2, my beloved necro was dead. :weep:
Some time later, I deliberately tried to reproduce the same situation with a different (but similarly outfitted Summoner), that is, just sitting around, not doing anything, waiting to see how long it would take for me to be killed. I tried ten times and gave up. A couple of times I took about 50% damage and had much of my army killed by fire archer skeletons, Slingers, etc., but never did I "wake up dead". I still can't figure out what B.Net thought was able to kill me. I guess I'll never know.
Anyway, after that little episode, I was thoroughly sick of playing D2. I took a break from it for about 3 weeks, then when I had gotten over it, I slowly started again.
Maybe a short break is what you need? Just a suggestion, from one who "feels your pain".
Cheers
Mr. Bill
I'm sorry to see you exit stage left, Mr. Hp_sauce.
You know, we've all got to take breaks from the game. It took me until the CTA to play another Necromancer after the one before it died.
I came back and then really enjoyed the character.
I hope to see you around. It isn't required, but I'd just like to say that I think you're a really good person. From all your various banter, drunken or not, that's what I've put together.
To steal a cliche line from one of my favorite bands Pink Floyd, "Shine on you crazy diamond!"
Best wishes,

Welcome my friend.
Sorry for your loss Colin, though in all honesty this way is probably superior to grinding her to 99.
If you still have interest in running a lightning sorc we can run some numbers and see if we can fit one into a CTA (maybe ladies' night or something)
To steal a cliche line from one of my favorite bands Journey, "She's just a small-town girl, living in a lonely world"
Satisfactory wishes,

Only if you give me free itamz... and Sean is required.
... All of it...
I guess we mostly all have our tragic 'unfair' death story to tell. I was thinking about it after reading your post and realized that before this, I did not actually have a tragic 'unfair' death story. All of my past deaths (that I can think of) were my own fault.... :whistling:
So I guess this is mine!

Thanks dude.
I'm glad I haven't managed to offend you in any of my drunken states.

You are probably correct. Though it might have been nice to have had the chance to get bored and retire her. I'll never know now, and the grass is always greener.

As sort of a continuation to my original post.
I sat down and charged IFindStuff (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=711221) though act 5 hell to Guardian status yesterday afternoon and really enjoyed myself. It was the last half of Act 5 - which I really enjoy - so I might be a bit bias, but I'd forgotten how much I enjoy SP sometimes... it's so peaceful.
I always get caught up with the people on b.net (not that there is anything wrong with the people). I always show up and chat with this person, or message that person, drop into a game to say hi to these people, then head over to another game to help someone, then off to check a mule for an item someone is iso, then back to the channel to harass someone and use silly commands, and when I did actually get around to playing it was always rush rush rush, gotta get this done, gotta do that, gotta keep up!
But in SP, if I sit down, kill 3 monsters and then decide I want to go make lunch, I can just leave the game paused! I don't feel bad because someone is waiting for me, or feel annoyed because I'm missing out on the last half of that quest.
Both b.net and SP have their place, and for now I think I can squeeze another month or so of fun out of this old hat if I go the slow and relaxed route!
Oh how I wish I wouldn't babble so much.

I totally understand what you're saying. I'm a lot like that when I play on BNet with the limited time that I have to play. I still like to pick up and id every rare that drops, always take the time to sort through the rubble and always pick up every single rune and gem. Always examine/id every Druid & Barb helm, pally shield, sin claw, etc. I'm generally a pretty slow player. Hell, when I'm doing baal runs I pick up all the health pots and give them to my merc just to reduce the amount of stuff on the ground to make sure I don't miss anything. My characters don't level as fast but I enjoy the game more that way. That's tedious to most folks.
Just about any time I've partied with people it seems like a mad rush to finish the run as quickly as possible and that just really isn't as fun to me.

Seeing a level 96 character die in game is rather unpleasing I must admit but seeing someone quit playing is more depressing . I know its a grind but everytime I die it only makes me want to play that much harder to get back to where I was . Just tonight I managed to finally get my new Frost maiden into her Mavinas gear and she ripped through Hell act 1 , 2 , and most of 3 .
And because no one was online on my /Flist I was solo once again ... Well I saw Shaharris online but he dont respond to me anymore , Sara popped online for a second , and I saw u too log on for a second .. I guess the game is more pleasant when u can take your time and play the game . I get to learn my characters strengths and weakness by playing and not trying to keep up and rush rush rush ..
Anyways , after all that I was just trying to say that Im usually online most nights Soloing the game so if ya want to play just let me know .. If ya need a break see ya when ya return ...

How are you even going to go and do this to me, sauce? Quitting when my return is nigh? Simply unacceptable. I demand a retraction!
