View Full Version : IK Maul: 80% ED socket, or 2x Shael socket?

Right now, I'm somewhat in a pinch. I never really understood the whole IAS formula, or the limits and such, but someone long ago suggested that I should socket the maul with 2 shael, to break some kind of speed cap. However, I also have an IK maul unsocketed, and 2 39% ED jewels. I dont visibly notice a difference, despite the first maul having a lot higher IAS.
Is the shael socketed IK maul faster during attacks, or would I be better off using those jewels and 2os maul instead?
[edit]
I have a concentration IK barb, with whirlwind as a second attack (at level 12-13 due to the + to skills and such).
The IK Maul needs 30% IAS to reach the fastest whirlwhind speed (-60 weapon speed BP) so 2 IAS jewels/shaels or any combination of those almost invariably equals more damage over time. I have no idea what the IAS BP's are for Conc, though.
IAS Attacks per second (conc w/ogre maul)
0 % 1.1
2 % 1.2
7 % 1.3
11 % 1.3
19 % 1.4
29 % 1.5
39 % 1.6
54 % 1.7
75 % 1.9
109 % 2
163 % 2.2
280 % 2.5
IAS Attacks per second (ww with Ogre Maul *IAS on weapon only*)
0 % 2
6 % 2.5
16 % 3.1
37 % 4.1
69 % 6.2
The differences on attack animation for conc might not be big, especially if you have the full set on and Highlords. (difference in attacks is only 0.1 attacks per second from 75%ias all the way up to 162%ias)
For WW, the extra speed (on weapon) is easy to get and well worth it.

The IK set in its entirety has the gloves given 30% IAS, do I need that 30% IAS on top of that or not?

Whirlwind uses IAS from the weapon only. Anything else is ignored.

thats kind of... ridiculous?? That pretty much takes away any use from IAS on gloves. What the hell kind of logic is that???
Well... I'm just going to keep one of those as backup. The shael maul I'll use for regular fighting and mowing down normal groups of monsters, and the ED maul for bosses, since concentration still deals 1000 more dmg on concentration per hit, with a much higher AR too.

I agree. While I understand that having all IAS effective on it would be overpowered, they could've done any number of things that would make more sense. It really limits the skill when a vast majority of weapons can never reach more than 2/3 of its potential (4.1 vs 6.2 attacks per second). :/

Actually, the speedy one will probably still outdamage it against bosses due to the combination of attack speed (whirlwind) and crushing blow.

concentration however, keeps my defense in the 30-thousands, which I need considering I somewhat messed up my barbs build by investing too much in dexterity (I aimed to go for a shield at first, until I suddenly managed to get almost the entire IK set for 4 pgems). My life, thanks to charms, isnt much about 3300, and baal does tend to ignore defense.
However... I will simply test out both mauls to see what works best for me. I agree that faster, weaker attacks work better than slower, stronger attacks.
Thanks for the advice :D
too bad ed/ias jewels don't grow on trees.
I'd have a whole orchard, and I'd go out every day to pick them.

So basically, you should put 2 Sheals in the IK Maul for better WW? Thx I was about to make a WW IK Set Barb. :alright:

^ Yes, you put in two Shael runes to reach max Whirlwind FPA.
@MichelRPG:
It only takes away any use of the IAS on the gloves if you decide to use WW. The 25% still helps most skills. But yes, I do agree, Blizzard definately did not give much thought when they were making items.

Pretty sure you only need an additional 30% on weapon IAS to hit max WW speed with the IK Maul. I'm just saying this since 15% IAS jewels can come with other tasty mods on 'em.

Oops, I misread the question --> I thought he asked if two Shael runes would do the job.
Yes, pacifickarma is right, all you need is 30% IAS more in the maul for the fastest WW possible. The extra 10% you get from two Shael runes does not increase speed any further.

but reaches the next conc ias bp... is that worth it?
seeing as ed/ias jewels don't grow on trees...

weather it's ias jewels or sheals, it'll be the same attack speed for ww, and the same 13 frame attack speed for conc too.
