Is it really worth putting points into? I have never used it, or had a real need to use it, because i can just tele on top of everything, and have maxed resists. Some people seem to love it, so should i put 10 pts. each into corpse explosion and dim vision instead of maxing corpse explosion, putting both at lvl 21 after +skills? Would the radii of the two be enough, or should i just stick with corpse explosion?

Well if you maxed both how would this affect skillpoints allocation?
For a standard summoner with 1 point in all curses and 20 in DV and 1 point in teeth and 20 in CE (29 + 21) there's still plenty of points for 20/20 in the basic summon tree.Spare points in all the one point wonders including maybe BA and BW.
The question is are 13-15 skellies, a similar amount of revives, merc and golem enough to do the damage?

I maxed mages, and will max them for my next build, so the damage point is moot as they are capable, with the other sources listed, of doing the damage needed. That gives me just over 20 ish skill points left over (not going to take him to 99) with which to play, which i have, in the past, put into corpse explosion, but am considering putting some into dim vision, which brings me back to my original question.

Well if its WSK clearances as you know the DV is handy shutting down the gloams and to some extent the witches but using the architecture and sensible teleing negates this problem to some degree and really you want the other monsters to close in enough to be affected by the CE. So casting a low level DV once or twice on the screen edge may do the trick but a single point in attract can redirect the gloams lightning just as effectively. If its just Baal runs then a higher level DV wil certainly on average get you there faster.
- I would max one OR the other.
Why? 10-10 will be OK but 20-0/0-20 will be hmm.. sweeet, yea very sweet. From each you will get what you can and they will shine.
- If you are mostly teleporting around, learn DV as you will have cool duration and radius so you can jump from group to group, leggero.
- If you like to have free army fighting at-will you will use them to cover you from enemy, so DV will be 'wasted' in this case.
- And, oh yea. Best wishes for the Newy Year from me and my hearth!

@ sike:
if i put 10 hardpoints into each skill, that would put both at 21/21 after hardpoints, versus 31/0 or 0/31, so would 20 total points in both be enough or should i dump all into one?
oh yeah, and uh, happy new year.
CE has a fairly small radius, so i'd just put one point in DV and max CE, thats what im doing. Otherwise the radius of CE gets too small to be really useful.
With all the various +skill gears 1 point in DV should more than cover you in a couple clicks.
Yes it will be good. And, those wouldn't actually be hard points ;)
- I dont really know which is your play-style to tell you what will work better as the case here is exclusively depending on that, your personal strategy/prefference, but i can tell you this two skills after slvl 20 will be fairly nice, both.
- Simply make them be 10/10 without fear and experiment with them to get the rhythm; they will non be wasted, not close to waste. After slvl 20 this two Gentlemans are what they are, but, after slvl 30-40 when you decide you discover amaizing superpowers of them,, as i sad first you must know which one you want.
- Main ''problem'' of CE is radius, while DV suffers in Hell 3/4 of its original duration i.e. 60 sec in Normal is 15 in Hell mode, and mainly that is why it's *waste* if not slvl 20.
