View Full Version : Barb Gameplay "fun factor" reactions?
Every Blizzcon gameplay review I have read has been filled with details on the barbarian which has been great but no one has really elaborated on how fun he was to play. I remember reading in IGN that they didn't have quite as much fun with the Barb as they did with the Witch Doctor and the Wizard.
Does anyone have any feedback on how fun they were?

Heres a review that gives the barb a 7/10 while the WD gets a 10/10..interesting

The wd and the wizy could be more fun to play cause there just new. The barb doesn't have that "new" factor. That could have something to do with it.

I think it might be because the barbarian is more of a gear dependent class. While you could have played a naked WD or wizard at blizzcon and have a blast (starting at level 5 with lots of skills also helps), the fun factor with the babrie really changed depending on what cool weapon you could find in your 10-15 mins with the game.
Yeah, the point about being gear dependent is probably right..I'm wondering if they're doing enough with it to give it that extremely visceral/cool feel that the other classes seem to have
Barb has always been one of the most boring classes on early levels.. after lvl 30 it was WEEE with Whrilwind :)
The gameplay demo shows some really nice action going on on later levels when you get all those nice skills.

yep early on its a little bit less awesome than a fully developed barbarian but by then they totally kick *** and there will be ownage aplenty.
the new experience should be fun first time through cause of the story and what not. and then if u make more and more barbarians im sure ull get tired of the low level grind but that happens.
Yeah, going -act5 for funsies at a LAN with friends, the Barb takes a while to have fun with.
Looks like i spent lots of time on full zoom in just too watch how blood cover my barbarian during fight :). Is this fun factor? :D

Like Barb for his brutal kind of play... Always rushing, in the horde of monsters... With plate armore and 2hand sword in hand...
Don't think it is boring at all... All classes do same things all the time... so i can't say frost orb sorc is much more fun than ww barb.

If you're a sick sadistic man such as myself, the fun factor comes in when you take something's head off with an axe and watch it roll down the stairs. Oh, the wonderful destruction game physics can create.
I hope every character will have their odds. The Fury issue looks really great in strategic and fun purposes. I can't wait more to start experimenting with it lol.
Please Blizzard, release the game! :D

Well this is as it should be. Melee characters always revolve around weapons... but I think they are making items have a lot of impact on spell damage. That is something you don't see in a lot of traditional RPG's, but it's clearly neccecary for endgame balance.
I don't know that the casters will have such an easy time using junky gear in DIII as they did in DII.
i think the barb look 400% cooler to play now....is skill arent boring like in D2 and they kept WW(the only skill that looked awesome on him in D2)
the WD doesnt seem that fun....he is basicly new...but with old skill that have different graphic...and most review are seriously bad now....some writer arent even gamer or shouldnt be reviewing game at all O_o
now the barb look fun from the start...so many AoE also now really an awesome revamp compare to the sorc/wiz revamp

To me the wizzy looks tame compared to the barb.
Ugh. Psycho, PLEASE stop using Elipses instead of other punctuation. That also means you have to periods at the end of sentences and not commas, and put spaces after the commas.
Anways, all of them look awesome. Barb has significantly more "Wow" than he used to, and I don't mean Warcraft. One complaint I'd make is that with his leap attack he jumps and then pauses for half a second in the air before slamming down. It's really annoying and sort of takes the oomph out of the move. I saw a video of a panel at Blizzcon that showed a blurry loop of the Barb leaping and charging around the dungeon, but sped up. Nothing has made me want the game more than that loop.
Really? I don't care much for the stomps... more for the visual "force" which goes behind every swing he takes with his weapons. It seems like he puts forth so much effort in each swing he'll tire out after the 4th enemy. It's awesome.

D2 did a good job with casters, but standing back firing spells and getting kille din one hit is not for me
I prefer a more active role in the combat, being IN the frey. Splitting deamons with a giant axe beats shoting magic lightining any day
Barb shouldn't be any less item dependent than a wizard but it is matter of balance.
Diablo2 world was overflood with magic items, no one even cared about white i hope they change it.

itīs simply amazin to smash your foes into pieces and chop thier spines right off.
Leaping onto thin bridges and watch the corpses fly down the darkness. Truly awsome!

I don't think the bard will truly shine until the later levels of the game much like in Diablo II. The barb is also that open book character in which everyone knows what they are getting straight from the start as opposed to the witch doc whose skills are more open ended, new, and fresh. Once you get a hold of some solid gear though I'm sure the barb is gonna be a blast to play.

Well, good thing this is a barb, not a bard.
I played a barb, and he did fine DPS throughout the game.
It looks pretty fun to me, with the physics and better graphics charging through heaps of skeletons etc. will probably look awesome.
If the classes that havent been released yet are crazy, I'll probobly play the barb first. I think he looked crazyfun to play in the gameplay trailer. So many different attacks to use.
I hope diablo 3 isn't a 1 skill to use pr. class kinda thing, like D2.
I played all three classes at Blizzcon and the barb was intense. The way rage generation keeps you wanting to push forward and keep killing, the toe-to-toe blood and gore (which is waaay more brutal than in D2) and the total Conan-inspired look (I mean c'mon, he IS a barbarian!) really gave this "old" class a set of new clothes. I loved it, even as a relatively skill-deprived lvl 5. Granted I always played the barb in D2 so I'm slightly biased, but that's the whole point. Each class offers a play style tailored for a certain kind of player, and the barb does not disappoint.
I was also at blizzcon '08. The lines for D3 got so long so I only played it once. I picked the barb. At the beginning I was kinda confused cause I didn't really have a grip on the fury system and how their attacks work. I thought they had a mana resource system from that first gameplay trailer at WWI. But once I realized it was just like rage bar from WoW it got pretty fun. I think most people pick melee classes cause it's fun to charge into the fray and smash things with a sexy weapon. The fury system compliments this style really well cause it gets so addicting destroying waves after waves of enemies while your barb gets madder and madder and does crazier attacks.
If they bring back the pally, I will be torn between that and the barb. Cause as fun as being a human demolishing machine is, I always preferred the classes with strong group support abilities. But you don't have to worry about barb not being fun though. :D

smashing weak skeletons down a cliff or slicin' them with your BRUTAL axe or polearm will be glorious moments...and they will NEVER stop comin'.
I always liked melee and how the barb can just hack straight on
I have one word for you gentlemen: Leap!
I am so totally rolling a bunny-barb! :D

I'd imagine the Barb didn't get as good of reviews because the playing style is so straight forward and simple, as opposed to a caster who has all sorts of fun and pretty spells you get to use.
That's why I like the Barb though -- he really captures the frantic clicking gameplay of Diablo. I also feel like the playing style of this type of character is so primal. That's why I love the Barbarian.

I love Barbarians in Diablo 2. That being said, I couldn't help but choose another class while playing the Blizzcon demo. Maybe for the new factor or perhaps it's because he's mostly item based.
