View Full Version : Help with GF/MF Barb

I've made a gf/mf barb that uses war cry to stun. He's level 65 and I haven't gotten him to Hell Council yet. He runs NM Council okay, but the problem I'm having is that War Cry doesn't always stun the unique council members. It stuns them about 20% of the time, so there's no way to keep them stunned unless I keep the inventory completely full of mana pots and use insight. Do I need a higher level war cry to stun uniques?

Also, does leap work on all of the council members? How many levels of leap are needed?

My barb feels pretty much complete, and he is going to have 10 to 15 spare skill points. Since BO (which I have maxed) synergizes Concentrate, I was thinking that I could make a him a warcry/concentrate (or remake a leap/concentrate) hybrid that could run the council and have an easier time questing and leveling.

If I went that route, I would probably have to rebuild since his strength is so low, however.

EDIT:

Actually, if he wore IK's gloves/belt/boots, then he would only need 111 base strength to then be able to wield a decent weapon and stormshield. He would either use something with ITD or Angelic Combo. If he wore two +str rings, then he wouldn't need further stat points in strength.

I went and did the skill quests from norm and nm. He has 12 skill points saved.

I personally use war cry, even though it is much more expensive to build than leap. On the other hand it is waaaaay faster too :)

Skills:
1pt Increased Stamina/Speed, Iron Skin
1 Find Item, Howl, Shout, Battle Command, 20 BO, 20 WarCry, 20 BattleCry, rest on Taunt (War Cry synergy).
Natural resistance enough to get you to 50+ resists after +skills and Find Item enough to get you to 50+ percent after +skills

Keep in mind that war cry is mana intensive (35 mana at slvl 25 or so), so you need a lot of gf/mana charms to keep it going (target more than 600 man after BO). It is hard to get any damage out of it, but you can get it to 1Kish with good gear (at about clvl 90), which will somewhat help on the killing speed (even though the council regenerates fast). Battle Cry is a nice bonus, long duration and at slvl 25 iirc it provides -100% target defense and -50% damage - basically your merc will always hit.

In my experience these are the things to look out for when building a gf barb:

- maxed fire, cold and lightning resists (even though fire/lightning enchanted Geleb Frameringer is always a danger no matter what). <-- cover these with rare gf boots, rare gf belt, rare gf ammy, rare gf circlet; also gf/resist charms
- more than 600 mana after BO <-- mostly from mana/gf charms
- 4K+ life (can get up to 5K with good gear)
- a source of teleport. This can be teleport charges on ammy/circlet or Enigma (yes, it is definitely worth the armor slot over Wealth).
- AFTER you cover the first three points maximize your GF (perfecting charms, rare stuff, getting enough Lems etc)

Of course, the merc does most of the killing, so he should be well equipped; Fortitude, eBonehew (Shael Amn) and CoT (15IAS, 80+ gf) are a good combo.

You should be looking at 90-120 second runs averaging 500-600K gold / run. As far as I know this is as good as it gets, even though I havent tried the dual Runemaster (5xLem each) frenzier yet ;)

Heh, you're somewhat right I guess.

War Cry wont stun uniques at any better rate at any slvl. However, I find that with a duration of 6 seconds and enough mana to spam it as long as the merc wastes the council, there is no difference. With high Battle Cry (-100% defense = autohit) and high merc damage per second this takes 40-60 seconds. Note that you need over 600 mana after BO and 2 belt rows of mana pots (max). You can even do the nastiest council packs this way, even with conviction, but you have to telebomb the merc on the aura enchanted council first.

For the desired slvl of Leap check Mal's guide. Slvl will increase the radius where the knockback effect takes place. Although it is a safe approach, it is slow and if the council is not stopped against a wall, well, you get the picture. Of course there is little reason to maximize concentrate and attack melee, as you will be leaping.

The same goes for warcry. Why bother if you are going to go melee anyway. Also, you are about to waste many equipment slots to help your melee skills that could be used for gf. The reason that my reply was somewhat off topic, is because I generally disagreed with what you were about to do ;)

I've got Warcry at level 10 (12 with items), and it seems to work well. The stun per mana spent increases very slowly, so more points in Warcry don't really help that much. The stun length is at 3.4 now, I think, and that is a comfortable length for me.

The only merc weapon I have that does more damage than my eth thresher insight is an eth thresher obedience, so I may just stick with the insight even though it is a bit slower. Though I guess I should try The Reaper's Toll. I can get 650 mana after BO with some charms. With Insight, I can spam my warcries without any problem.

I only have one hard point in Battle Cry, so I will probably get the up to at least level 10. I have 20 points saved, so I could max it.

Several people on the forum seem to love leap on a goldfind barb. I was considering getting a helm with leap and stacking on +skill gear just to see how it worked. I went with Warcry originally because leap seemed to have obvious problems.

They're very easy with warcry and taunt. He would have had a set of leveling gear and a set of goldfind gear. I wouldn't do goldfind runs without goldfind gear. But that's a moot point now. He can do his own baal runs. I haven't gotten him to Act 5 Hell yet, but I expect he'll be able to do baal runs there too.

And I've been gambling for a good belt. I was using a level 89 character, but it seems like I need to use a level 29 character to maximize the chance of getting fr/lr/gf.

By all means stick to that. I've maxed it because I am trying to squeeze some damage out of it (nothing better to do with the skill points anyway)

eObedience is nice. So is Reaper's. IMO eReaper's > eObedience > Reaper's. You will lose a couple of corpses per run with those, but they are nice alternatives to either eBonehew or upped eHone Sundan (ok, there's eBotD as well, but ZODs do not grow on trees).

I am SP as well and I've built my GF barb two times now. It is a bit of a hassle, but definitely doable without killing a single thing. eObedience is available in the mid 50s and nightmare Baals will take you to 75 lvl easily. After that, you only need to do Hell councils anyway. Of course, at some point visit Act5 to get the resists scroll quest (can be hard, get teleport charges). I do not think that hell Baal runs are doable (haven't tried though).

And I've been gambling for a good belt. I was using a level 89 character, but it seems like I need to use a level 29 character to maximize the chance of getting fr/lr/gf.

None of my unique polearms are eth, so I'm using the eObedience. If my meph runner finds an upgrade, then I'll use it.

I've been gambling with a level 25 character. Level 24 is ideal for gambling fr/lr/gf sashes and light belts, but I wanted to use an Edge bow. I've gotten a couple fr/gf, lr/gf and fr/lr belts, and the best has been a 30 lr/13 cr/60 gf belt, but nothing really good yet. I've gambled about 500 to 600 belts.

Edit: You've probably done this already; check the weapon speed calculator to try and reach a reasonable fpa with tyour merc setup.

Threshers reach a decent break-point to start with. Right now, I have an amethyst in the CoT so he could wield the thresher at level 55, but I may hel it out and put a jewel of fervor in it soon. I don't think I have an ias jewel with anything else though.

I've been running hell council on /players1, and it isn't much harder than nm council on /players8. I tried /p7, but it was too hard. Maybe once he gets to level 80+ the merc will be able to handle it.

I've been gambling with a level 25 character. Level 24 is ideal for gambling fr/lr/gf sashes and light belts, but I wanted to use an Edge bow. I've gotten a couple fr/gf, lr/gf and fr/lr belts, and the best has been a 30 lr/13 cr/60 gf belt, but nothing really good yet. I've gambled about 500 to 600 belts.


Yes, the idea is to be able to get high enough minimum ilvl so that the alvl (iirc alvl = ilvlv - mvlv) of the first two or three types of belts and boots (so that you do not have to reload the gamble screen endlessly searching for the Boots boot type for instance) allows the desired affixes/suffixes :thumbup:. You probably know this already, but the item generation tutorial is a great forum resource


Threshers reach a decent break-point to start with. Right now, I have an amethyst in the CoT so he could wield the thresher at level 55, but I may hel it out and put a jewel of fervor in it soon. I don't think I have an ias jewel with anything else though.


Use what you have by all means, but know what to target for. eBonehew, eHone Sunndan and eTombie are all high damage polearms, with free sockets to increase speed/life leech/ed with no cold damage.


I've been running hell council on /players1, and it isn't much harder than nm council on /players8. I tried /p7, but it was too hard. Maybe once he gets to level 80+ the merc will be able to handle it.


I've tried /p3 but gold/minute just goes down a fair bit. Maybe with an upped eSundan it will be faster, but I have yet to find one. Anyway, unless your barb can dish out high DPS (i.e. decked out frenzier) stick with /p1. You shouldnt need more than 150-180 seconds with starting gear and you should be able to do it in 90-120 seconds with good gear (for instance Forti on merc).

What's fun about the gf barb is that there is always something marginally better to use that you will find/gamble on the way. Have fun :nod:

I'm enjoying it, but I've spent several hours gambling belts. It takes long time to gamble 13mil when you do it 4k at a time. I think I've gone through about 3mil now.

I think I'll use the decent belt I gambled, do some runs, and then gamble ammies and rings. I'll get back to belts later.
