I am new to assassins, what is the best and most common assassin builds?

Lightning Trappers and WW sins are the most popular/common.

There are all kinds of assassin builds that I know of:
(1) shadow artists (shadow+MA)
(2) kickers
(3) martial artists (pure MA)
(4) trappers
(5) hybrids (w/ skills designed for other characters, usually from equipment runic or otherwise)
(6) [whatever else I've missed]

"Best" is a rather relative term. So I guess that means the "best" build would depend on what skills appeal to you. And as such, the best kind of build have the skills you want to develop as the game progresses. You don't have to make cookie cutter builds just because. Experiment. It's all going to depend if you play PvP or PvM.

The kind of build would help too with the skill and stat point distribution. From what I know kickers usually invest on dex (kick dam mostly comes from dex, strength gives only min dam), melee-ers invest on strength; personally I do 35%str 35%dex 20%vit 10%spare + 75pts mana.

(1) Shadow artists divide skill points mostly between MA and Shadow Discplines, with hardly any points in traps.

(2) Kickers use charge-up skills + finishers.

(3) MA is, well, PURE "karateka".

(4) Trappers invest most, if not all, skill points on traps. Lay down traps, hide behind traps as charges are released, terminate whatever is left standing when charges are expended.

(5) Hybrids use swords, maces, whatnots that aren't sass-specific. Runic stuff stuff include those that imbue skills that are non-sass-specific. Case in point is the whirlwind sass (whirly is a baba skill).
