Harlequin Crest = Book of Fire Wall? (glitch)

so i'm not sure exactly what caused this problem. i'm playing diablo (v1.0, i.e. no patch) with hellfire installed, the patch for hellfire, and a no-cd patch (the less i use my laptop's cd drive the better... i've already replaced it once).

so i had just finished the valor quest and decided to start a new game. in the new game i looked at my inventory and noticed an interesting glitch:

somehow my harlequin crest got turned into a book of firewall that's also a butcher's cleaver. i reloaded my old game and started another new one and the same thing happened.

whereas i'm mainly amused by this glitch, i am slightly concerned that should i start a new game (with this character), this may happen to a valuable item that is not easily replaceable.

I'm reading the "The Hell" mod FAQ right now and has this to say:

Q: My quest unique items morph into useless items after game restart. Why is that?
A: A bug. It's planned to be fixed, but no luck yet. Only quest uniques morph. Others - don't. Quest uniques are also available as a random drop, in that case they will not morph. Note: Quest uniques will not morph if stored with Gillian before starting new game.

i'd be willing to bet that the glitch has nothing to do with that mod then.

Yeah, but that's not what I was trying to say. What I meant to say was that it's a glitch that has never been solved, but that you can use Gillian to save your quest items.

Gillian only saves items in that particular mod (or any other mod that has that functionality in it), not regular Hellfire.

I'm surprised you bothered to use the Harlequin Crest, I usually find it's more useful to sell it and buy something else that you need.

yeah it was the best helm available at the time and has since been replaced.

It could be a problem with the no-cd crack. You would be better off using Daemon tools (or some other virtual drive) to play without the cd.

I had the same happen to me,and I have neither hellfire nor any cracks .So this seems to be a bug in the original D1 game.

I suspect it was probably never fixed because Harlequin Crest is such a lame helm that no one really uses it between games anyway :)

morphing uniques were a bug in D1 early on. As was stuff left on the ground in town vanishing during games from some sort of memory overflow bug. They, and lots of other bugs, were fixed in later patches. I'd recommend upgrading your version number. The patches are available from blizzard.com.
