Firewall + Frozen Orb Sorc

Hello!

Me and my cousin are about to play Diablo 2 again, both of us are fans of the Sorc class and will be playing together, he will play a frozen orb sorc and I will play a firewall sorc.

Now I was thinking of going with:

20 Fire Wall
20 Fire Mastery

20 Static Field

I dont want to create a high level sorc, just enough to kill Hell Baal, I was thinking my cousin could deal with fire immunes while I static field spam everything so im not twiddling my thumbs.

Would this be viable, are there many fire/cold immune mobs?

It'll definitely work. Both spells are quite strong for only a few skillpoints, so you won't have much problem with damage. Firewall will be a little tedious around large packs of cold-immunes, but it can be done with static and teleport and a tanking merc.

As for your level, you're going to have a hard time getting to Hell Baal at level ~60. I always plan to be at least level70 (and that's with good equipment); usually I plan for level80+, as a minimum. Because of that, you could more easily go with a pure-fireball build (very strong) and still have lots of power because of the excess skillpoints. Although I love Firewall for its awesome-power-at-a-low-cost and unorthodox style, Fireball sorcs are much easier to play (and more enjoyable for most people too).

Also, although extra points in Static Field can be nice for some things, you seldom need 20 of them. You can get by fine with only a single point though.


FYI, questing through the game you'll probably find between 5 and 20 monsters (total) that are both fire & cold immune. But if you use an Act2 or Act5 merc and he has even a moderately decent weapon, the mercs can kill those for you quite easily. Static Field is lightning damage, so you should use it in these cases - and the knockback effect from telekinesis can help a lot too (by stun-locking the monster while your merc gets the kill).
