I've seen this idea used elsewhere so this is by no means original, but I thought it made for an interesting item and would add a 'collector's' aspect to the game.
Given that we know the Diablo 3 dev team wants us to assume the role of specific, rather than generic characters, I think that a journal of some sort wouldn't be a far fetched addition. It could serve as a quest log and as a sort of trophy log displaying possible achievements and what awards they give you. That's for another topic, though, because what I want to focus on is a sort of monster log! This log would hold all the monsters you've encountered and would display stats for the monsters including hp, abilities, and resistances on all three difficulties. But, not without a cost! The logs would remain inactive until you acquired and used an item such as a 'journal entry' or 'scrap paper,' or whatever. These would randomly drop with more powerful creatures (including super uniques) being exceptionally rare. They wouldn't serve any direct purpose beyond being collector's items, but they might also allow the player to check monster stats while ingame. In addition, and this is more iffy, some small damage bonus could be given to players who have collected the log for whatever monster. This would drive players to seek out rare monster logs as well.
