I started playing d2 again about 2 months ago, i played a barb till lvl 87single player, but that was before the xpansion came out.
After making a new barb till 83, and being disapointed a bit, i made a ww one and got annoyed with the kinda lame triangle wirling. I made a necro till 85, and again i was disapointed a bit, i was nice with all the summons, but they lack focus in attack and took long too down even 1 monster for CE.
Now i made a sorc, she is lvl 86 and quite nice, but i am still, a bit disapointed, i think i have decent gear at my disposal and big crowds of mobs go down nice and fast, but for some reason she has trouble with bosses and HELL and WSK dont go really that smooth, if i compair here to a sorc with orb as main for example. My buddy has, i admit much better geared, a frozen orb sorc and 3-4 hits meph.
Im using, occu, shako, skulders, visatage (what is that shield called, with +1), war travs,+3 light neck, nagel, raven frost, change guards, arach, torch, no ani yet :(, and i also have a CM crystal sword, and a wizarspike.
Cm makes the bosses allot easier, but im max block, and having a hard time getting the right resists (with for example spirit shield) lacking in str with such high dex, making me easy to kill or having to give up allot of mf.
My trading is picking up, and i have some um's and pul's availble but nothign big yet.
Basicly i want a nice killing macine sorc, meteor looks nice, but the falling down delay looks REALLY anyoing.is it?
I think getting full tals wont be that much of a prob. And i dont mind making a new sorc.
What would you do? Hunt for griffon's eye and pimp this one, hope for infinity, and make a pure light?
Make a meteor/orb talrash?
And, whats your opinion on MAX block/VS max vit, beceaus atm, im not that happy with max block.
Hard choises, i just wanne be able to kill diablo/hell, and baal with decent safety, and speed.
My current skills are max
lightning, cl, lm, FO, few points into cm, rest is preq.
Regards, Blaze
I've played loads of sorcs, this is my personal opinions. Ppl will disagree me no doubt.
1. CL/FO is a bad start to sorcs. Its one of the least powerful common builds. The CL part is extremely weakly synergised. The FO is relatively weak to begin with without pumping icebolt.
- I would recommend meteorob as the first sorc or maybe blizzballer.
- pure lightening is also good but you need to be seriously geared up. I would say infinity is almost a must for doing all the things you want in hell.
- if you have CM, griffon is extravagant. It will help though.
2. In terms of gear, if you have just started, infinity is going to take a while to accumulate wealth for. It took me over a month to save up enough ists. I dont regret it at all though, a pure light sorc with infinity on merc is awesome, for want of a better word. If you get lucky and find a nice item to sell for it or find it off the back of a lorry.. by all means go get it, but use it on a pure light sorc. When you're pumping out 30,40,50k light damage at 125FCR, it hurts.
3. Max block is good with Stormshield/Shako combination (45% damage reduction). Other builds use spirit and it isnt worth max blocking with a monarch plain.
4. Again, for pure killing - light only. You can start the char now if you want, infinity just allows you to kill at a much faster rate, and break almost all of the light immune monsters. The only ones you cant break are the returned mages in WSK with the light attack (no other mages or monsters stand up to infinity from my experience) and some bosses who have naturally high light resists and also have the magic resistance and/or light enchant mod.

And how does fireball/meteor/orb sorc do in Wsk, River of flame?

CL/ORB sorcs can be pretty effective.
Get full tals, the -15% light resist and +15% cold DMG is pretty nice.
Get a Spirit Shield with 35FCR (or a litle less, with a FCR ring)
Do what ever you need to reach 117% FCR.
You will surely have a better experience in both survaivability and killing stuff.
You will be able to solo Chaos by yourself and WSK with a good merc (Insight, duress and gaze, for example)

It is best choice IMO. I've started this ladder few weeks ago and I'm quite poor. My sorc equip:
2xspirit, viper, shako, rings +str, belt with str add, war traveler, magefist, str amu and random torch :D for str. Few str and life charms - 1350 life atm.
ATM 89lvl max frozen orb and cold mastery, max light mastery, rest in CL + synergies - about 1.5K avg dmg. With sorc torch and eni she will be much better. I'll change rings for FCR, amu for 2+ and belt for nice craft or arach.
FO is powerfull, althought damage does not look great in statistics you must remember that this is damage from one ice needle. Needles hit much more often then blizz. I've tried both FO and blizz sorc in last ladder and found FO better.
I have no problem with hell Andy, Meph and Baal. I hate chaos sanctuary, because merc die when mages cast iron maiden. I have no problem with Countess and Horazon. Nihla is small problem but possible.
I dont have any problems with my 89 FO/CL sorc anywhere except CS, since my merc keeps killing himself, and WSK, if there's gloams that snipe me before I can TP...CoH should help with that once I get it, too. And occasionally a pack of archers with fanat and/or amp can be troublesome, but thats about it, and the kill speed is very good.
I use HOTO/shako/viper/spirit/frostburn(chances)/arach/war travs/BK(cuz I dont have an SoJ)/natures peace(manald)/+3 light ammy
Max FO, one pt in armor, one pt cold mastery, one point ES, one pt warmth, first max CL then LM then Light then rest in CB
I went max vit since sorcs shouldnt be getting hit anyway, and with an insight Prayer merc you regen life and mana pretty fast.
I wouldnt recommend it for a brand new account, since it starts off a lot slower than a meteorb and is a tad more gear-dependent, but if you have access to some decent low-level gear and mid-level sorc gear I think its a little more versatile than the more cookie-cutter boss-running builds.

If you are poor you probably don't want to roll a CL/FO in the first place because its not very good without decent gear. Thats mainly because Lightning isn't that effective until you have alot of +skills and full synergy (which involves maxing nova, chain lightning and charged bolt).
Really good MFers that are cheap to make effective are usually cold based because cold mastery gives you in built negative resists which are stonking good for dropping non cold immunes and all bosses really quickly.
Blizzard and Forb sorcs are decent for this sort of work.

max CL, CB, and Lightning, you mean? OR CL, Lightning, Nova? Lightning, when its synergized up, gives you better damage against single targets, its the first one I'd synergize up.

it is up to you to synergise with Nova or Charged Bolt. Charged bolt is the best sorc spell to kill bosses, get close enought to the target and cast like crazy. It has a faste casting rate than lighining and have a pretty good dmg.
Nova is most fun spell in PvM, IMO. Itīs offensive playstile is unique in the game.
