how do you activate hc mode?

Hey guys just downloaded d2 off blizzard store after 4 years of no d2 and want to go hardcore this time without having to defeat big d on normal.

Can someone help me out with editing the registry to do this? If not it's okay I'll go spank big d on normal.

Help you out with the registry how?
If you're unsure of what to do, it's posted in the FAQ.
If you have a specific question, you should probably ask that question.

It's possible that the registry tweak doesn't work in Vista if that's what you're running... I would think it would, but the last person to complain about it not working was running Vista so perhaps the two are related.

The other 2 things you can do to avoid having to muck around in normal are either download an SP character from somewhere that's completed normal, pop it into your SP save directory, and make an SP game with it. Or you can log onto an account that has an HC character on it already... don't PLAY on that account, just log onto it then go play on your account.

Okay cool I activated HC... but what's this "expire" crap. That wasn't there when I played. What is this?
