Hi, I've been following the guide for my first character on D2 posted by Elio (the meteorb sorc), and I have a question about attribute point placement.

So, I basically need 156 points in str to use my newly crafted spirit shield. I cannot reach this minimum following the advice that Elio gave because I do not have a perfect anni/whatever the other thing is to get +40 str. As it stands at level 78, I have 116 str and am considering investing 40 points into str over the next 8 levels to hit 156. Is this a good idea?

Or the altnerative is to invest 30 points over the next six levels and sit tight until I get my hands on wartravs (+10 str).

Thanks,
Stout

Having a few extra points in strength won't break your build; a lot of my sorcs end up with an extra +10 in strength or dex. I'd rather just spend the points and be done with it and not worry about the ~20 life you loose in the process.

we're talking 30 - 40 str, not just 10. Still worth it?

Hi! I'm fond of pure vitality... ^^;
By the way, what items do you use?

Right now? Well, its my 4th day playing but I have 4/5 tal (missing ammy), lidless and thats it for items worth mentioning. Everything else is just trash.

Try these...
Skills + Strength Amulet (Aim 20 ~ 30 Strength)
Chains of Honor (20 Strength)
Enigma (Strength Based on Character Level)
Faster Cast Rate + Strength Rings (Aim 10 ~ 20 Strength)
Sandstorm Trek (10 ~ 15 Strength)
Marrowwalk (10 ~ 20 Strength)
Strength Charms (2 Strength Small / 5 Strength Large / 6 Strength Grand)
Fal Rune / Perfect Amethyst / Strength Jewel (9 - 10 Strength)

This is my pure vitality Tal Rasha's Wrappings

I used to use Spirit Monarch (With 2 x Faster Cast Rate 20 Strength Ring + 2 Strength Small Charms)

Just do it the way I did it. Put as many points as necessary into strength, so you can equip the Monarch. Even if it's the entire 156 points. You don't lose that much life because of it. Once you get War Traveler (Sandstorm Trek can give you the same strength bonus), an Anni and a Torch, you can rebuild the sorc if you feel like it. Perfect Annis and Sorc Torches are quite expensive, and there's only a small chance to obtain them yourself without trading. So even if you find them yourself, you can have bad luck and they only give you +10 strength each.

with full gear my sorc has 172 strg and i dont give a **** about it....

20-80 life wont make that big of a difference for a MF char.

I wouldn't be paranoid about stat distribution until you have your ideal gear. Once you have that then you can just shift all your gear to a mule and delete your character, then remake it properly. Levelling it is really quick if you join public trist/tomb/baal runs and get norm/nm/hell rushes in between. You will be back where you were in a couple of days and all your stats will be optimal for your gear.

Right now, just focus on getting to the stage where you can MF and accumulate wealth so you can start getting the gear you want. To do that you have to be running Hell bosses since very few valuable items drop before then with any sort of regularity.

Also don't forget that if you are coming up short on strength, you can always trade for some +5 strength large charms and make up the difference until you can get that strength on your gear. +5 strength large charms are cheap as chips.

I will do this. Thanks (the +5 str gems).

As redground said, ~40 extra in strength isn't a big deal (of course, if you can avoid wasting points, you should). But Spirit is worth those extra points.
