View Full Version : D2 vs D3 Inventory (incl pics)
Love how D3's turning out so far..except the one-grid-per-item inventory...I know they dont want tetris-style item arranging to slow down play, but:
1) That was fun! Say what u like but shifting ur Tal Rasha collection around to make space for next great find was enjoyable! The irritation only came with re-arranging tons of one-slot runes&gems and..
2) ...an 'auto-sort' button would take care it, not too hard
3) Jus looking at the pics, even tho current D3 items look bigger than in WoW, the minute size stil means tremendous amount of detail lost when compared 2 D2 items..
4) You lose sense of scale. Equippin an 8-slot greatsword felt lot more satisfying than holding a 2-slot dirk. Now they'd feel pretty much the same
What's ur take on this?

2) Auto arrange cannot arrange as nicely as a human can. Everybody has their own way to sort stuff in their bags. Left are potions, then random crap, then the ice skill set, then the fireskill set etc.. This is impossible/too much work to do for auto arrange.
3) The detail is on the char, not in the bag. Quite a low end priority here.
4) See 3.

While the icons could be bigger, I really like the paper doll. Playing dress up with your character is fun for most people. This doll gives me a good look at all the items.
The only thing I do miss is the sense of scale between weapons when in inventory. That was nice in D2, but it also lead to ridiculous things like a chipped gems being the same as that greatsword.
The Tetris was annoying sometimes because of a lack of rotate. Sometimes things just wouldn't fit unless you could rotate them. Made it pretty annoying.

Wow! The stained glass windows look great! Also, you can see your dudess standing there with both screens up.
I also noticed the background image behind the 3d model. Anyone know if that changes to match the area you're in?
What's that meter-looking thing below the 4 stats?
My only concern is the small amount of info on the chr screen. I was hoping it would be flooded with details and novel ideas. But then again, simple is beautiful sometimes.

No it wasn't (fun that is). Shifting things around to make room for the next great find was always very frustrating.
I'm sure it was enjoyable to you, but don't make such sweeping claims. Because for me it most definitely wasn't.
As such, the D3 inventory looks far, far superior to the D2 one to me.

I prefer slot-inventory. I am sort of used to it now because of all the other games I have played, and DII and Sacred just feel outdated with their tetris. The tetris system is somewhat more acceptable in slower games (BG/NWN).
Sacred has auto-arrange, TQ has auto-arrange, both suck. Nox just had slots and a weight system, was much easier to use... although I am not sure if I like the idea of the inventory resembling a stash but whatever.
The pictures would be fixed, I'm sure. And even though I liked the nice pictures, I always wanted to see how items would look ON character, and now we have that option.
As for now I prefer the new inventory system, mainly because D2's didn't have the item rotate capability.

No it wasn't fun, it was long and pointless, the new system will just do this better.
2) ...an 'auto-sort' button would take care it, not too hard
I highly doubt they will go back to the old way and work on an auto-sort button that I'm not sure what good it can do... You mean like you see a 6 slot armor that doesn't fit in your inventory, then open your inv. press auto-sort and it get sorted all magically so you can have a 2x3 space left? what if you wanted a 1x4? And just by the time you were thinking of this your item got stolen woot.
3) Jus looking at the pics, even tho current D3 items look bigger than in WoW, the minute size stil means tremendous amount of detail lost when compared 2 D2 items...
Ya they said a couple of times they were working hard on that. The screenshot you sent wasn't the complete truth though : I thought they'd make something like show a bigger graphic if we mouseover.
4) You lose sense of scale. Equippin an 8-slot greatsword felt lot more satisfying than holding a 2-slot dirk. Now they'd feel pretty much the same
The idea brought on #3 could fix this.

I play Diablo to play Diablo, not Diablo and Tetris.
One-slot per item inventory ftw.
I also noticed the background image behind the 3d model. Anyone know if that changes to match the area you're in?
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that what we see in that window is a zoomed-in version of the actual in-game model. In which case the background should be whatever room you're in at the time.
Too much to hope for, maybe. But it would be a nice feature.

I agree that tetris mini-games don't make it for diablo. Its great that they've dumped that stupid facet of the game. Still not going to pay to play though.

I'll miss the look of item graphics in the inventory, but the new system certainly looks to be a lot more efficient. Plus the look in-game is more important than the inventory graphics. Maybe they'll add an option to right click something in the inventory to view it in great detail.

That tickled my ribs. Ok there's no p2p in d3, but if there's is I'm not paying for it. :guiness: <== Will they have self replenishing guiness'es?

I have to say i like the D2 large items better, than a small icon. It made me want to get the grail, but i dont want to plug in as much hours i did on d2 into d3 so the small icons will do fine. No more grailing for me on D3 i hope!~
