View Full Version : Other worlds? Endless possibilities...

So someone in Blizzard let slip that there are other worlds? My initial reaction was Great!!! now we can have endless Diablo pleasure! But the question is whether or not this takes away from what Diablo has meant from the beginning. In Diablo I you learn of the Sin War where Light and Darkness have fought eternally for ultimate control, neither side getting the upper hand...
Until Sactuary, the neutral plain which could tip the scales either way. There was a great purpose in defeating Diablo, because if you don't the Uglies are going to rule everything... What now? You have endless worlds, some controlled by Heaven, some controlled by Hell giving negligible meaning to everything we have achieved in the past!
I hope that Blizzard hasn't taken away from the ultimate meaning of the game but just adding a little too much to the replayability of the universe or just to open a separate storyline to start a World of Diablo...

I personally like the Planescape probabilities, but the 'alignment' in Diablo lore has been pretty much good versus evil, so it really limits what you can do with it.

Lol, I had the same feeling of hating this... I created a topic and no one responded :(..... But, I checked the article it came from at it asked if there would be other worlds we'll go into in the acts of Diablo 3 and the comment was more pointing towards other worlds such as outside of Sanctuary, like the High Heavens... thus "and the heavens shall tremble". That's just my guess work because I love the Lore of Diablo, and adding in new worlds would almost destroy the point of Diablo.
He could just mean other, different types of landscape.. as in D2

"More worlds than meet the eye?"
That sound more like multiple worlds than different areas and we know about High Heavens and Burning Hells... Maybe there are different levels of Hell and Heaven like Dante's Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise... Feels like it’s a good fit in the Diablo Universe...

That's a damn good way of saying it! I can only imagine the outer layers of the abyss beyond the Burning Hells.... or the City of Glass (The city where the Angrius Council is whatever it's called) would be pimp.... I really think that this game is going to take us into Heaven... it'd be interesting to see the player distracted by Imperius (visa versa) if the Prime Evils use that as an opportunity to get directly into the High Heavens... So many things that have only been talked about tjat we haven't yet seen or have had any clue as to what their full extent is...

I agree, but I read somewhere that if a mortal were to enter the heavenly plain he will cease to exist immediately? But either way, I would also like to see heaven in all its beauty and also more of hell, the little we saw in the previous games was rather disappointing in its Hellness...
The multiple "levels" of heaven and hell really appeals to me. But you don't have to create them as levels like in Diablo I but as different world you have to travel through to get to your final destination being either the High Heavens or the Burning Hells... Either way, I really relish the thought of being immersed in Diablo lore when the new game comes out...

Isn't it the same as the difference from Diablo 1 to Diablo 2? In D1 you were fighting to keep this village from being overrun and in the end succeeded and defeated Diablo... except that in D2 it turned out that you really didn't and in fact released the evil onto the world and caused the destruction of the village you were trying to protect, which raised the stakes in D2 as now you were fighting for the world.
So it seems to me D3 is just scaling things up again. They've already hinted that everything so far has been going according to Hell's plan, so it's likely that in D3 you get to see a similar turnaround as in D2 where what you thought you achieved really just played in Hell's plans, spilling out into the wider multiverse. Now you're not fighting for just one world but for all of existence.
At least that makes sense to me. :)

I'm happy either way. But I see the issue with adding a bunch of non-Sanctuary worlds to complicate things and draw us away form the Diablo world lore.
Just an idea I'm throwing out here, but I'd be happy with "planes" instead of "worlds". So you can travel to the plane of fire and you'd better take fire res gear before you step through that portal. Or the plain of the dead where the landscape is made entirely out of bones and this plane houses all the things that have ever died. Needless to say, you fight a lot of skellies here. With planes, they're kind of abstract and obvious so you know full well what the plane of fire is; you don't need to delve into any new world lore that would distract you too much from Sanctuary lore.
Of course, the visiting Hell and even Heaven as an upgrade from d2 would be great too.

You make a lot of valid points! And to a certain extent that would make sense in terms of the ongoing storyline... BUT if you think that DII was also part of the Prime Evils' plan, how do you explain Tyrael's involvement in DII(there was no angelic influence in DI)? Unless you argue that he has been part of their plan all along (there is an appropriate thread in the lore section of the forums if you want to go argue that point there.)
I personally think that other worlds would dilute the storyline rather than buff it up. Make other worlds by all means but keep them within a Heaven or Hell realm, DON’T make other sanctuaries... But like I always say, that’s my two cents worth, feel free to disagree...
Post Script: I am of the opinion that there are going to be other "sanctuaries" out there... But I don't necessarily like it

not sure how i like the other worlds idea unless it refers to heaven and hell and places within them. i really do not want to go world jumping in d3

Its possible that previous "Sanctuaries" have been used by either Heaven or Hell to further their own ends... But hopefully they don't exist anymore...
Actually, I was always fond of idea od a Sanctuary world not bound by acts or any other boundaries, where you would have a countless area to explore. Maybe its a bit too much for a simple hack 'n slash RPG, but still, I emagines something like World of Diablo :))
Then I saw the world map of sanctuary, and even if that's not the case, something familiar will be. Sure, they can make planes and I'll still be happy. Like, Mortal plane, Hell plane and Heavenly plane.
Cause, four acts in D2 are just too small.

Stuff like that is okay. But going overboard with Sci-Fi/Aliens or what have you must be avoided.

i agree, i can deal with that as it sorta fit the heaven hell thing, traveling to another magic made dimension. however like you said, going and fighting aliens or traveling to other planets kinda throws off the entire struggle between heaven and hell for me, i want it to stay like that, not turn into some huge stargate kinda thing

Agreed on that, the whole problem with Warcraft's lore started when Draenei became like aliens with holograms and stuff. Before that the whole idea of Draenor wasn't that bad.
Still, it could be, like others said, different layers of hell or different areas or Heaven, perhaps a purgatory, and fantasy like alternate dimensions like the Arcane Sanctuary, not exactly worlds then.

Exactly what I had in mind. "lorelol" from YTMND is spot on for me. I accepted is now as part of the story but it feels wrong.

You are not alone. If they really want to travel to other planets, the whole Diablo franchise will change completely. It will be destroyed and revived as something completely different.
