View Full Version : Wizard inspired by Jedi?

As opposed to the standard old man wizard, this wizard is young, brash, anti-establishment, ala every young Jedi hero.
This wizard has many skills specifically made for melee, very stange for a wizard but quite reminicent of a Jedi.
I would say this wizard is more Sith-ish considering the darker clothes, and of course, the electrocute skill.
Visually, the new wizard definitely reminds me of some of the images I have seen of the protagonist for the new "The Force Unleashed" game.
What do you think?
I agree. I immediately got a force unleashed kind of feel when I read about and watched the wizard trailer. It seems to match pretty closely. It's a young powerful character that wants to try all the dark dangerous stuff out. Seems pretty cool to me.

Kinda reminiscent of D&D if you ask me. (aka neverwinter nights)
Definitely DnD.
Half the Wizard's spells are classic DnD spells (some with a slight change).
I'm positive that the imagining and creation of Jedi in the Star Wars movies were in fact inspired by Wizards from DnD and other games/literature, not the other way around...
Jedi were based on asian elements, such as Wuxia stories.
DnD Wizards were based on stuff like Jack Vance (hence, why DnD Wizard spellcasting system is called "Vancian Spellcasting."

Actually, just read the novel "Dune" (incredible, BTW) if any of you guys want to know what Jedi are REALLY based on ;) Not to mention most of SW itself.

lightsaber pretty please Cast "Magical Weapon" on the equipped weapon and you have your lightsaber. I am sure that skill will have a nice animation on the equipped weapon. Not seen anything about this skill in the gameplay video yet though, neither of the 2 videos.

But what about Obi Wan and Yoda? These are more like the old man wizard. So it works both ways.

Very much a D&D wizard, baldurs gate 2 era. Which is a good thing.
Come on,acid cloud? Abi Dalzims horrid wilting anyone? Arcane magic seems similar to D&D death magic (lasers/rays, stuff like that). Time distortion, clones (mirror image,simulacrum)...
It's all good. Ripping off other IP's is what blizzard do best. They've absolutely pillaged warhammer and warhammer:40k, now its D&D's turn :smug:
Warhammer, yes.
Starcraft, not even close. Warhammer 40k fans are seriously self-conscious if they think Starcraft was based on WH40k and not 900 other sci-fi settings.
you sure she wasnt inspired by Benjamin Franklin?

first off, the Starwars franchise came long after D&D.
Beyond that, Jedi's are mostly very disciplined- not the other way around. They undergo a very long training period, and adhere to a council.
Being rebellious is not a trait you're likely to encounter in your day to day Jedi... they are basically jedi KNIGHTS, with all the babble that comes with it- honor, law, et cetera.
The wizard in D3 doesn't give a crap about that, just enhancing his powers. I suspect we'll see him "mature" as the game goes to become a nobler version of himself.... but I hope the slightly up-nosed attitude will remain, it makes for amusing RP

So the developer team at Blizzard leans a bit in the D&D direction this time. I like that and it certainly fit into the wizard attitude :)

All art forms, and that includes making video games, draw from what came before them...especially what was popular. It's really not a crime. Here is how the decision making goes...
"Hmm...people really like X, I think they would be happy if we included some aspects of it in our work. We would probably also appeal to a wider audience if people recognized and liked aspects of our game, and, ya know, I would really like to have as many people as possible enjoy my work, both for money and because that's why I bother to do this. Not to mention I grew up loving X, so it's ingrained in my subconscious in terms of what I come up with when I try to think of cool ideas."

Unless,of course, you are stealing from Blizzard (especially battle.net code), in which case a horde of lawyers the size of a wildebeest herd will arrive at your doorstep and sue you into oblivion. I'm as big a blizz fan as the next person, and i'm sure you are too but that doesn't mean you have to live in a fantasy world as opposed to playing in one.

As long as she doesn't get a high level skill called deathstar beam and blow up a planet, I'm good!

I would hardly say stealing specific code or exact applications of ideas of things falls under what I was saying. I'm referring to the recurrent themes, ideas, homages, and influences in the artistic tradition, not talking about plagiarism or theft of specific, trademarked creations. I'm pretty sure that was obvious if you read my post.
Checkpoints that you respawn at after death is a good idea to incorporate into a game...calling them "rebirth fountains" and having them make the same sound and have the same animation as those from Titan Quest would not be a good idea.

I don't really know where this comparison comes from...
Actually, just read the novel "Dune" (incredible, BTW) if any of you guys want to know what Jedi are REALLY based on ;) Not to mention most of SW itself. And who in Dune resembles the Jedi? Bene Gesserit? That'd be a huge stretch if you ask me...
I guess since the Spice gave humans unnaturally long life and some supernatural powers - as well as cool blue glowy eyes... One could possibly link "The Spice must flow" to "The Force flows through you" but, yes it's a stretch... since The Spice is an actual tangible substance while the force is intangible. Also the Bene Gesserit use their voices to control a foes mind sort of like how some Jedi use their Mind Trick on their opponents. But that's the only relation I could see, beyond that I don't get where you could equate Force Lightning to anything in Dune.

Just cast "Magical Weapon" on your weapon of choice and i guess it will start glowing in a nice lightsaber fitting animation?
Seems this thread turned from actually finding a different name to the wizard class into finding well sounding names for the wizard playing character.

I'm going to call my wizard what I always call my spellcasters: CastRaider

I agree. I've always thought that to be the case.
if anyone in Dune are Jedi its the Navigators and their ability to see through time. Really, though, only Paul is truly "jedi-like" in that he can use his prescience to fight with :).

The back story I thought smacked with Anakin Skywalker or Mary Sue-ism.
Er... This is action RPG. Every character is a Mary Sue by default.

In backstory? I haven't read all of them in a while but the wizard's really stuck out. I just remember a lot of emphasis on how she was this young maverick prodigy with power beyond her years who wanted to travel the world to gain more power.
I don't know how much of that bled in from my other memories of similar characters but it made me curse George Lucas and 90% of all the animes when I read it, that much I know is true.

Nah, he's prob just remembering the Voice / Jedi Mind Trick resemblance. And the fact that they both use melee weapons... but that's just because they're both inspired by oriental concepts.
And wise old codger teaching/guiding young heroes is older then dirt, even Tolkien took it from Odin of norse myths...
