Two possible meanings:

1) The more likely meaning when people say "Eth Bug". Using the "punch socket" horadric cube recipe into an ethereal armor, shield, or helmet, will subsquently reapply the 50% Defence ethereal bonus.

2) The less likely meaning when people say "Eth Bug", as it has been fixed and no longer works. In previous patches, socketing an ethereal weapon with Zod, then removing the Zod via the "clear sockets" horadric cube recipe would result in a weapon that was permanently Indestructable.

What do you mean by "punch socket".

I see people posting about eth bugged gear being good for henchies and I also see the term on the trade forums. Thats why I asked.

Thanks.

1 Tal Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Topaz + Normal Body Armor = Socketed Body Armor of same type
The number of sockets created will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-4 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. The chance to get X sockets in most armor is 1/4 (I.E: Mage plate has a max of 3 sockets, so it has a 2/4 [1/2] chance to get 3 sockets). The base of 6 was used in the ratios for all the above mentioned areas.

1 Ral Rune + 1 Thul Rune + 1 Perfect Sapphire + Normal Helm = Socketed Helm of same type
The number of sockets created will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-3 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. For example, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 2/3 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/3 chance of getting 1 socket.

1 Tal Rune + 1 Amn Rune + 1 Perfect Ruby + Normal Shield = Socketed Shield of same type
The number of sockets created will vary. The item must be normal and unsocketed. Low-quality items and superior items do not work. The item gets 1-4 sockets, randomly. However, the number of sockets is then restricted by the maximum number of sockets that base item with that ilvl can have. For example, if you have an item that can only have 2 sockets, there's a 3/4 chance of getting 2 sockets and a 1/4 chance of getting 1 socket.

As you can see, the number of sockets you get is random, so there is no fixed way to get 4os or 3os.

Say for example you found an ethereal armour and it had 750 base defence (no sockets in it), once u cubed it with the tal, thul & perfect topaz, it would come out with a base defence of 1125 (50% added). Then if you were lucky enough to get 4 sockets, you then decided to make Fortitude (El, Dol, Sol, Lo) runeword which adds a further 200% then you would have an ethereal bugged "fortitude" armour of 3375 defence. Then throw the armour on your merc and he will be virtually indestructible except for when he comes up some particularly nasty monsters. That's my understanding od the "Eth Bugged" thingy

Thanks, that clears things up.

I thought it had something to do with the eth rune.

Actually there was a bug with the eth rune in weapons. It's supposed to give -25% to defense, which means it only takes 75% of the defense into account. However, in 1.09 it actually set the defense to -25%, meaning that none of the defense was taken into account, making a weapon socketed with eth have itd, with the exception that it worked on bosses too.

This has been fixed since then.
