Merc Leveling question

Will a merc thats leveled from level 1 have better base stats / resist / hp than one bought at a very high level? (assuming same difficulty/act merc)

Merc stats depend solely on 1) their character level, and 2) which difficulty they were purchased from. IIRC, Normal mercs have the highest stats (which doesn't matter if you have/want a Holy Freeze or Might merc), where Hell mercs have the lowsest. However, the total amount difference of stat points are so low it isn't really much of an issue.

There is no need to level mercs, if they fall behind somehow, just buy a new one. I think back in 1.09, it was necessary to level mercs, but now you can hire mercs very close to your own level.

Once you at lvl 85+ if you keep your merc with you all the time it is completely impossible to level faster than it
