If you have eg 30% deathly strike (from high lords wrath) is that the same as 30% enhanced damage? (in average damage) or does DS double all your physical damage? I mean is the damage doubled before or after the ed modifiers are calculated?

Ex: You do 100 base damage. You have 500 ed so you have total damage of 600. DS kicks in and doubles damage to 1200. OR you do 100 damage, DS kicks in and doubles that to 200 while you get an additional 500 damage from ed giving you a total of 700 dmage. Which example is true?

I copied deichsela's post from this link: http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6739720&postcount=2

1. How does Critical Strike work?

A common misconception of Critical Strike is that it doubles your final damage, including the elemental and poison damage. However, it applies only on your base physical damage. For example if one has 1000 base physical damage and 500 elemental damage (totaling up to1500 damage), you'll do 2500 damage if the Critical Strike activates upon the hit.

Deadly Strike
This is a chance of doing double damage. All melee damage is doubled, whether its physical, magic or elemental (such as skills Berserk or Vengeance). Deadly strike is the last thing that's applied to your damage, meaning that all other damage modifiers are taken into account as well. Deadly Strike stack in all cases, there is only one chance to trigger a deadly strike blow per hit. There is no cap on how high the chance to trigger a deadly strike can get, but anything over 100% is a waste. Critical Strike (CS) and Deadly Strike (DS) exclude each other. Deadly Strike does not work with Smite.

As for Critical Strike working in conjunction with other items that give you chance to do a 'Deadly Strike' (which also allows you to do double the damage), the game will first check for the chance of Critical Strike activating then check the chance of 'Deadly Strike' activating. The damage, however, doesn't get quadrupled because Blizzard has disabled Critical Strike working on top of 'Deadly Strike' as well. Therefore, if you have both, you just have more chance of dealing double the damage.

If you have a 33% Deadly Strike item, and 68% Critical Strike Skill the complete chance to get double damage is:

=CS + (DS/100)*(100-CS)
=68% + (33/100)*32%
=68% + 10.56%
=78.56%

I hope this helps

If you by "base physical damage" mean the damage before ed is applied then those 2 quotes do contradict each other. As for elemental damage the 2 quotes definitely contradict each other.

Deadly and critical strike only work on physical damage that is applied via an attack (so not only melee damage, but also ranged). They double the total physical damage done.

Yes, total. It's multiplied by ed%, enemy physical resistance, etc.
