- Introduction. Is Fast Eddie really that fast?
Hello, Fast Eddie here. I have been playing D2 for about six years now. I don’t count the period when I bought the game in 2003, made a Barbarian, put all my points in Bash, died to Blood Raven, and hated the game for nearly a year.
When I returned, I spent most of my time on BNet, gaining a L87 Barbarian and a L84 FishyMancer (ironically I used the guide from here, but didn’t then harness the true power of the SPF or NightFish). However like some people on BNet I still knew naff-all about the game, and am still learning things today. I started SPing in 2006, and found the forums later that year. It is my one true escape from RL, and like nearly everyone here, I spend more time lurking and talking about finding a Ber than actually doing something about it. My favourite classes are Sorcs and Necros, but I’d love to diversify my portfolio.
The one thing I missed about BNet was the silly chit-chat and banter. With Hamachi, some guidelines, and some like-minded people who can’t host but wish they could, I hope to kickstart the MP forum so everyone can find a Tyreal’s before D3.
- SPF Formalities a.k.a. Where I Try Not To Be Condescending
Due to certain circumstances, the SPF Hamachi networks mentioned will no longer be maintained, including accepting new members. For those that are already on the networks, they will continue to function and operate normally. if you are not a member of a Hamachi network, you are able and free to create your own, and even use this thread to maintain it. If you do so, I would suggest only giving out the details via PM as non-members can read these forum walls and posts.
- How Do I Hamatch?
I know some of you will already know how to use Hamachi, but some people are downloading the program just to MP and therefore may need some guidance. Hamachi is an application that can generate a fully-functional virtual LAN with no extra configurations. It can be downloaded here (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp). It also comes with built-in Instant Messaging, which can quickly aid hosting problems or last-minute muling notifications. In layman’s terms it can enable someone who cannot host a game of D2 to host, and can save a lot of time with people checking PMs and thread updates and edits etc.
First off, unless you wish to install to a custom directory, the default Hamachi install settings will be fine and dandy for your MP needs. However, there are a couple of tweaks that may benefit your experience of Hamachi, including:
- In ‘Window’ under the preferences menu, there is an option to only show those persons in the network who are online. It can be handy, but I leave it switched off.
- In ‘Window’ under the preferences menu, there is an option to change what happens when you double-click on a member. By default it is set to ‘Ping’ but I find it easier to change it to ‘Send Instant Message’ (a.k.a. Open IM Chat Window).
- Just because a member’s Hamachi is left on, does not mean that they wish to MP, let alone have a char in the Act and difficulty you require help on. I doubt I speak for everyone but I for one have my Hamachi start up when my PC boots, and after a nine hour shift at 2AM Sunday morning the last thing I want to do is MP. An acceptable state of affairs would be one polite IM asking if they can MP in your favoured act/difficulty. However a ‘game up’ message should be posted in the forums, as to be discussed later.
- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can let you ping them, giving you an idea of connection speed as well as whether you would be able to connect to this host. It can also let you copy their IP address to paste in D2 in the TCP/IP menu.
- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can give you the Chat option, to IM with them. Again, it’s just that much quicker than forum refreshing/PMs but some folk may not like it/use it.
- Right-clicking on a member’s IP can give you an option to Set Label. If you click on Custom you are able to change the name that displays for that Hamachi member on your Hamachi front-end. You may want it to be identical to their forum name or change it to a word that reminds you of them.
- Double-clicking on the name of the network changes your status to offline (and vice-versa). This can be handy if you have other Hamachi networks, or simply don't want to MP but wish to leave the program running.
Once you have organised a game thorugh the forums (preferably) or IM, the IP you must connect to is the simulated Hamachi IP which begins 5.xxx.xxx.xxx. This is not the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx that D2 suggests, or the external IP gained from www.whatsmyip.org. You may need to disable your firewall. If you have a seperate firewall application (as opposed to Windows Firewall) you may not need to, as Windows Firewall is more strict than some other applications. Making an exception for Hamachi in Windows Firewall does not work, you can't host if Windows Firewall is on.
- SPF Hamachi Etiquette
There are already set rules on how to politely and successfully MP on the forums here (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4904901#post4904901). However there are a few pointers (merely pointers) that can enhance SPHamMP. These are:
- Post a game up or game suggestion in the forums. This will not only tell all the Hamachi members you are LFG (for lack of a better phrase) but also the non-Hamachi members as well. If they can host, then you’ve got yourself an extra player to kill some baddies with!
- Once you are hosting a game, YOU are in charge of the game. This mean the standard MP rules, including but not limited to: Your pace, your drop rules, and you reserving the right to check up on a member before you feel comfortable MPing with them, including whether they are allowed to currently MP (they may have an infraction/ban). To date every member has an intro thread posted in the SPF. Again, you are all free to create your own network(s) should you not like the rules.
- I have PM’d both SPF mods regarding the setup and continuation of the networks. This is not a threat of any sort, but due to the fact that the network has a significant amount of members, including some well-respected old-timers, purely a notification. Together with the fact that I begin the final year of my degree this year, I am not around for help.
- Current SPF Hamachi Members
This section is no longer in use or maintained due the the discontinuation of my control of the Hamachi networks.
- Contacting Me
As I have relinquished control of the Hamachi networks, and am advising enthusiasts to create their own, the best way for further help or to ask any questions would be to simply post in the thread.

Great guide, Eddie.
Thank you for your effort. :)
Wow. A great honour, thank you.
I just want everyone to MP! It's disheartening to see so many missed games on the forums.
Thanks for the kind words all.
Well Done Eddie :) Very nice Guide. You say everything thats needed to be said. And as Eddie said it has grown exponentially over the past couple of days, at first it was me, eddie and cheese having some private mp games, then wham people really got into it and now theres a total of 10 of us XD
Hamachi is the best thing since D2 and WoW XD

Please welcome our newest member, Mr Bob T. Warrior!
@ Bob below: Have added that into the FAQ for Mr Justin Case.
@ All: The FAQ is updated. Fixed some typos and added a few lines about Windows Firewall.

Simple and easy to join, thanks Fast Eddie.
BTW to all: Making an exception for hamachi in Windows Firewall does not work, you can't host if Windows Firewall is on. At least, not with this simple change. I suppose there is some way to setup the connection, but I'll be darned if I know how to do it :)

Not as fast as I used to be. Yet another promising athletics career that lost the battle to Cornwall's influx of black tar heroin in the late nineties. :dopey:

C'mon People. Let's keep this on topic, and make this network even better than it is! I need your comments, or even some MP anecdotes...
So I saw yesterday that you were hosting a game and you said it was over hamachi, is there a way for those of us not using hamachi to join without getting hamachi?
Fast Eddie
16-09-2008, 11:53
I'm afraid not Moo-Cow. The virtual server that Hamachi generates is inaccessible to those without the program.
Kyrandia
17-09-2008, 09:34
"The virtual server that Hamachi generates is inaccessible to those without the program"
Because it uses an IP range that is reserved for private LANs, 5.225.xxx.xxx. The address won't resolve if you're not running Hamachi.
"@ All: Kyrandia has added a second account to the network."
Not because I'm schizo but because I installed Hamachi both on my desktop and my laptop and the program assigned me a different IP for both machines.
Is there a way to transfer a Hamachi account from 1 pc to another in order to avoid this?
Fast Eddie

Is there a way to transfer a Hamachi account from 1 pc to another in order to avoid this?
Well I've been scanning through Hamachi for options like this but haven't been able to find one. It's alright for the should term but should interest skyrocket again there's only a maximum of 50 people allowed on one network I believe, so we'd have to limit the network to one account per person.

Will Hamachi let me MP through a router I have no way of configuring?
I don't see why it shouldn't. Anyone offer some tech advice on this? It wouldn't hurt to try. I can PM you the Hamachi details on further request if you'd like to try.

The simplified technical answer is yes and no. It will allow you to get through most standard ones, but some enterprise routers will make it impossible. I could give more information, but unless you're a network admin, the easier option is to just try it.
CoRnJuLiOx
21-09-2008, 00:37
The website says it will work with your existing router with no additional configuration. So unless you really ARE behind some enterprise router, you shouldn't have a problem. I was able to start using it without having to configure anything related to my router. Now if only people were on so I could play....

@ Cheese: Spud has already suggested it in a different thread. But the thread died. Like him. Where's he been this last weekend? :P
@ All: Maybe post some availability for a larger MP game? Maybe ask your wife/gf/life for just *some* time off? Not counting Kyrandia's double accounts we have a whopping 15 people on the network.
My availability (GMT +1)
Tuesday - all day
Wednesday - all day
Friday - all day

Just to let all know I have finally got around to editing everyone's intro thread links back in after they got deleted. This will be the final update to the FAQ until a necessary change is required, or the network gets new member(s).
Of course, continue to post questions, comments and suggestions here, as that is what the thread is for.
Thanks.

Hi guys, having issues
When I start Hamachi, it says it cannot find the Hamachi Network Adaptor, and suggests reading the forums at forums.hamachi.cc, it is fully allowed through zonealarm, and I havent fiddled with it since I last MPed
When I click on the link Firefox3 won't accept the site because it doesn't have a security certificate
Any idea what's going on? (no its not the ghost of Windows firewall haunting me)
Fast Eddie
12-10-2008, 20:19
Has your trial version of Hamachi expired since you last MP'd?
Mine has. Earlier today I got a message saying I wasn't pinging very well with Kyrandia, but I never followed it up to any extent. Not sure if the expiry prevents or limits connectivity (for our purposes 'MP'), and I won't be until I can test it with someone.
Sorry I can't help more.

Ive had this happen and it was because i had a it installed ona different drive than my windows drive (C:) when i formatted and re-installed windows, i thought i would work right out of the box - nope, had to delete it all (hamachi stuff) and re-install, heres a link to the direct download :D
Hamachi 1.0.3 (http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/ebdc77cd89d0eee8ef52110213a68150d5264e29b05f58b770 95b863eb2d8e51/)

So this means every time the trial runs out I have to reinstall and get a new Hamachi IP/invitation to the network?
Fast Eddie
15-10-2008, 22:47
Well CoT et moi just played some MP over Hamachi, and this is after my trial ran out: For three hours in the early afternoon it worked fine, and as soon as it hit evening our lag hit mountainous proportions.
Devastating.
If more happens I will report here, but that's all I have for now.

EDIT: what does that flashing green star by your name mean FE?
EDIT2: you are now unreachable FE

This unreachable thing puzzles me too. Sometimes it helps to simply restart hamachi, sometimes it doesn't.
Fast Eddie
19-10-2008, 21:55
To be honest even as the host of the network I don't know that much about the program. You may be better off asking Cheese On Toast, but as he is very hard to get hold of, PMing him may have a batter success rate than simply posting here.
Recently as I stated, my trial licence expired and I've only had very limited MP since. I've also had strange interwebs troubles. I "lost" the internet for 24 hours and everything in my limited repetoire could not get it back until it magically reappeared.
It may have been BT temp-banning me for trying to download 20 films and 50 albums at once, but dammit I needed them!
I suggest the best anyone can do is just post updates, ideas and suggestions. I doubt anyone will purchase the full version of Hamchi just to MP on an eight year old game, so I'm as lost as some of you.
Kyrandia

I doubt anyone will purchase the full version of Hamchi just to MP on an eight year old game, so I'm as lost as some of you.
I don't think that is necessary. Hamachi is free for non-commercial use. I too got the "license expired" message at some point, but I simply downloaded a new version and it has been working fine ever since. (It also says "Non-Commercial License" now when I move the mouse over the blue star at the top right of the window.)
Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling?
Fast Eddie
21-10-2008, 18:40
Oh really? Well I guess I just didn't think it would be that simple :P I will try to look at that when I am next free.
Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling?
This worked fine and solved my Hamachi problems.
Now if I could only minimise lag...
Hello, I would like to join Hamachi games if that's still possible.
I sent a PM to you Fast Eddie in hope for an IP/PW.
Thx in advance. :)

PM sent to neno.
Thx. :) Anyway, to introduce myself;
I am 22 y.o. guy from Croatia. Played d2 really ALOT (since it's release, with pauses). :) SP, Bnet etc... favorite classes are sorc, javazon and barb. I am familiar with Hamachi as I played Titan quest over it with some friends. I stopped D2 'cos Bnet style of playing is too repetitive for me, and this looks like refreshment, as I look forward to play with fair bunch of people. :)
Hope to see you in game soon. :)
Hello again, while trying to connect to Eddie's Hamachi server I encounter an error that says Network is full eventho it apparently is not. Anyone know possible solution for this problem?
PS:
I already have 1 network running on it without problems... and FE says there IS room on this server aswell... hmmm! :|

Ok , got the network name and pw but it says the nw is full. Read info on Hamachi that a non commercial nw limit is 16 people. Having just one nw for the whole SPF wont work. There are too many people and too little slots.

To update everyone - I have created a second network for the newer members, obviously it will be a bit more sparse than the older network initially. I am getting round to PMing Starloader, neno and Tanksaabas with the new details.
There is also a Median XL Hamachi network now, and I have updated the original FAQ in post #1.

Well I got in now atleast. So thats good.
Hi, wouldn't mind if I could get in on this secret society as dune puts it, I don't mind joining the 2nd network since I play with Neno a lot anyway..
Hopefully theres no shin kicking for joining this particular group
I am also reporting my entrance on 2nd Hamachi server, sorry I wasn't on lately I was busy building frenzier. As it's almost over I'm rdy for some baal runs and other fun. :D
However, only few people on this network... maybe some balance would be nice to have between 2 networks?
Fast Eddie
12-01-2009, 14:08
I'd be more than happy to let a few people from the first network onto the second, but the same problem of overcrowding may occur again. If anyone from the first network wants to join the new network to help the balance issues, please post here or PM me. We shall see what happens.
I'm in the process of keeping up to date with the new networks and membership applications as best I can, but I'm getting my *** kicked by college ATM so I may take a few days to reply.
Also, my forum subscription ran out recently, so my PM box pretended it was full, so I may have missed some PMs before I renewed it just now.
Thanks all.

UPDATE
======
I have just got a new computer, and with it, a new Hamachi IP. As a result, I am unable to log on to the SPF Hamachi networks, and have basically lost all admin capabilities. This means that only those currently on the SPF Hamachi networks can access them and continue to use them.
I am taking this opportunity to halt maintaining any SPF Hamachi networks - please do not PM me with any requests to join the two SPF networks. However, the FAQ will continue to be hosted as a means of general information about Hamachi, and you can still post questions here. Also, just because I am not maintaining any networks does not stop you from creating your own! I would suggest an element of caution as these *may* be less well maintained and policed than the ones I ran - if everyone set up their own network it would be very hard to keep track of them all. There is already a network ran by forum member Juicy Cheese which is quite popular.
I would like to thank all those who took an interest in the networks, those who joined, and those who used them to enhance the SPF MP community. It really was a joy to do, but university work has got the better of me this year.
Eddie.
I'd like to join this. The way I understand it, the first and second networks can no longer accept new people? I guess I should just PM Juicy Cheese then?

Yes, AFAIK the Juicy Cheese network happily accepts people onto it.
Hope that helps.

Hey guys, how can I get in on all this Hamachi goodness? Anyone running a network that can send me the info?
Hi guys. I've been playing Diablo since 2004. But I had a break.
I haven't played on an MP before so I guess this is the right place to go.
Can I join? I want to see how MP is awesome. :)
Hello, I'd like to join the network, I haven't MP-ed in a loooong time. How do I get in?
I don't get Hamachi at all. I had the same problem the last time I had it installed, but someone had to walk me through it, and I've since then forgotten how to use it.
I have it installed, but when I go to join an existing network, it requires I enter a network name. What are these networks? Is it just "Network One" and "Network Two" as they were listed in the initial post? Do I have to send a PM to every single person who says they're hosting via hamachi to get the network name? What about the passwords?
The Hamachi guide doesn't explain any of this to me, so I don't quite understand at all. How do I join a game that someone is hosting using Hamachi? I'm also using whatever the newest version is at the website linked if that makes any difference.

@Nirolo: Sorry for not responding sooner. The original networks that you may have heard about are disbanded AFAIK. You could try asking to join a network in the FAM MP thread, if you have not already.
@Serdash: The networks Hamachi requires you to join can be created with the Create Network button. A popular one is here (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7376235&postcount=2075), though I am not sure if it is full. You must enter the network name and password in Hamachi and then (if there is space on the network) you will see the full network member list, along with their Hamachi IPs and their online status, and be able to ping and IM them at leisure. When one member is hosting an MP game, you simply copy their IP and paste it in D2's MP menu. I hope this helps, if it doesn't, please feel free to post again.

At least some of us actually migrated here (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7376262&postcount=2077), as we had minor difficulties getting back into the one linked by FE. Really though, I'm not sure if any of the networks are particularly popular these days, or at least the decline in games involving Hamachi on the forums make it seem that way.
So rather than posting "hosting a game via hamachi" wouldn't it be easier just to say "Hamachi game is up at <networkname>:<password>?
Oh well, I suppose next time I see a Hamachi game up I'll try one of the two given networks and passwords to figure it out.

I know this thread has been seven months without a post, but as I just referenced it in the (current) main 1.13 thread I thought I'd let y'all know I've updated (hopefully successfully) the initial post for newbies. The original networks are down but the guidelines/tech support/etiquette should still apply.
Thanks, FE.

Does anyone know if there's a setting on hamachi or on system preferences that needs to be changed? I turned off the obvious ones like firewall already. It's weird that I can connect to their games, but not the reverse, so I figure it has to be an issue of some setting not being enabled or something that has to be turned on/off. Would appreciate anyone who has some sort of knowledge on this.
Thanks.
To be honest hedley, that does sound like a port forwarding issue. Do you have more than one computer on the network to which they're trying to connect? If so you need to forward the ports so the router knows to send the information to the computer running D2.
It *shouldn't* be an issue through Hamachi though, just if you're doing it normally.
Thanks Thyiad,
After taking a look at what port forwarding was, that's definitely it. I have two computers on my network, so I just need to configure the ports to direct D2 inquiries to my computer. That also explains why I could play in other games vs people being unable to join mine. Good to figure out what the issue was.
Thanks again.
