I don't have diablo right now, but I believe you press 's' and this brings up your spells listed. You can then assign hot keys to the spells by hovering over them and pressing F5-F8. Then once you either select a spell or press its hot key you will automatically be able to use that spell. You need to reassign your spells each new game. Which four you should assign depends on your class and what level they are. Most people use heal and assign at least one spell of each element to combat creature immunity in the beginning. You can see what level your spells are by pressing 'b' if I remember correctly.
you have to read books to learn spells. Find books on the bookshelves or scroll stands in the dungeons, or buy them from Adria.
Once you've read a book the icon will become available from your right click icon. Use the hotkeys, F5-8, to map spells to that mouse button, for easier execution.
I played through Diablo1 without using magic omce... which is quite sad when I think of it.: imo the first game was revolutionairy for it's time, no doubt about that, but it was the worst balanced game I've seen so far.. I mean: I didn't use any skills or anything and I just beat Diablo by hitting him enough times and using a few potions (didn't even have to portal back to tristram...).

Um, in all fairness it sounds like you only played Normal (single player?) mode, and probably a warrior, in which case you wouldn't need much more than the decent equipment you can find along the way and a heal spell.
Multiplayer is harder, and Nightmare/Hell harder still. The game *is* unbalanced, but in favor of magic at that stage. Any good warrior will make skillful use of a selection of spells, and any good sorceror will blow the doors off a warrior in killing speed. I suppose it's *possible* to beat hell without using any spells, but that would be one slow journey.
Been there, done that, had three red dots behind my name, never doing it again. It IS a slow journey, and I occasionally used a bow for some ranged damage.
