Best Merc for PvP LvL 18 Paladin???

I am building a lvl 18 zealadin and am thinking of giving him a merc. Is it even worth the trouble? If so what would be the best one that I can buy in normal. And what type of gear would keep him alive in duels?

One, its a bit BM

Two, they die very quickly

Three, they wont do any proper damage to real duellers

That said, my level 30 V/T has a might merc equiped with an Honour Lance, a maxer breast plate and a maxer helm. The only purpose of him is to scare noobs who join the game, the merc hits about 1300 damage with both his aura and my fanat on the go. Hes completely pointless in proper duels though, and I tell people to kill him before we duel.
