Hi,

Jewels and small charms remain to me one of the most confusing aspects of the game. I have a orb/lightning sorc using a socketed occy. I have a ptopaz in the socket to add 1-40 lite damage. In looking through my jewels, I have found a couple that I am interested in using to relpace the ptopaz. One jewel adds 1-86 lightning damage; this would seem like a good choice since it does the same as the ptopaz and more of it. However, I also have a jewel that adds 22% enhanced damage. Since my lightning damage is over 10,000, a 22% increase is way more than just 86 damage points. Is that how it works or am I misunderstanding how to do the calculation?

Also, for the ptopaz or a lightning jewel, does the same figure apply to the chain lightning skill as to the lightning skill, or is it different if it applies at all?

I also have a 10 res all jewel that is awfully tempting since I could eliminate some charms, but I think I would rather go for the damage.

Another jewel in my stash adds only 1-56 lightning damage, but it adds 3 to minimum damage. It seems like adding 3 extra damage points is nothing and not even worth bothering with. And then there are other confusing options like the 22% ed jewel includes a mod where the attacker takes damage of 3. Again it seems like 3 is just about zero so it is worthless. The thing is that I notice sometimes people seem to value charms or jewels that have these piddling little numbers. How do I make sense of which choice is going to best affect my damage inflicted?

There is a page on this site that gives great information on charms. It is a lot of information, not a simple reference, but I have read it through a couple of times and probably will again. It is here (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=403178). If someone knows of something similar for jewels, your passing it along would be super!

Thank you so much for any help and information!

Ok first off the Ptopaz you have in the orb will only work if you actually strike something with it. Same for jewels that add damage. The 22% ED jewel you have will increase the physical damage you do when hitting monsters with the Occulus, not for any spells you cast. So you're better off putting the 10% resist all jewel in the socket, as the rest of the ones you mentioned are worthless on a caster.

For casters your best bet are either raibow facets (cold dmg ones in your case, not really a must for PvM) or jewels that add to whatever you are lacking, all resistance jewel is a good choice. You could also go for jewel with multiple mods such as fhr/str/dex/all res or high single resistance. Whatever you need basically.

As stated above dmg modifiers you've listed only work with melee attacks i.e. when you whack monsters with your weapon, attacking them with oculus isn't a good idea, sorcs are rather fragile
