Listed below are the most desired affixes on crafted items, crafting recipes and general guidelines for crafting.
Affixes are written in the format:

[Effect]...[Affix-name]...[Affix-level]...[Affix-value]

Effect: Should be mainly self-explanatory
* mf = Magic Find
* gf = Gold Find
* fcr = Faster Cast Rate
* fhr = Faster Hit Recovery
* fbr = Faster Block Rate
* frw = Faster Run/Walk
* pdr = Damage Reduced by X
* ll = Life Leech
* ml = Mana Leech
* ar = Attack Rating
* ias = Increased Attack Speed

Affix-name:
For quick reference at Arreat Summit or for calculations on ilvl and qlvl when crafting.

Affix-level:
Level of the affix (called alvl).
Used to determine which affixes can spawn on which items (based on ilvl and qlvl) - see bottom of post for more info, or read Item Generation Tutorial (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392254) for more information on alvl, qlvl and ilvl.

Affix-value:
* (Desirable) -> Other affixes are superior to this, but it may still hold some value.
* Desirable -> Potentially valuable with other supporting affixes.
* Very desirable -> Potentially very valuable with other supporting affixes.
* Essential -> Essential for an item to hold any value.

NOTE: This list is not intended to be used in valuating items required for lower levels (or LLD). Only the most sought after affixes (regardless of level) are described.

NOTE: Calculations and descriptions of alvl, clvl, ilvl and qlvl can be found at the very bottom of this post.

Crafted amulets:

NOTE: All amulets have a qlvl of 1 thus allowing any affix with alvl <= ilvl
to spawn (see bottom of post).

* Hit Power amulet Thul + Pf. Sapphire + Jewel Rarely used
- {5-15}% hit causes monster to flee
- 5% chance to cast level 4 Frost Nova when struck
- {3-11} attacker takes damage of

* Blood amulet Amn + Pf. Ruby + Jewel Rarely used
- {5-10} frw
- {1-4} ll
- {10-20} life

* Caster amulet Ral + Pf. Amethyst + Jewel Very commonly used

- {10-20} mana

* Safety amulet Thul + Pf. Emerald + Jewel Commonly used
- {1-10}% increased chance of blocking
- {1-2} magic damage reduced by
- {1-4} damage reduced by

NOTE: A clvl 93 character gambles amulets with ilvl in the range 88 to 97.
If that same character uses such an amulet to craft upon, the resulting ilvl will
be in the range 90 to 94 (ie. able to spawn any affix).

Description of alvl, clvl, ilvl and qlvl and how to calculate/find them:

qlvl: Short for quality-level. Quality levels can be found listed on Arreat Summit for weapons and armor (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/weaponsandarmor.shtml). Amulets and rings have qlvl = 1.
ilvl: Short for item-level. For found items, ilvl is equal to the level of the monster, that dropped the item. For gambled items, the ilvl is within the range -5 to +4 of the character level. For shopped items the ilvl is the level of the character + 5 (note though, that there are ilvl caps on shopped items in normal difficulty - Act I through V has ilvls capped at 12, 20, 28, 36 and 45 respectively).
magic_lvl: Only used for circlets (qlvl = 24, magic_lvl = 3), coronets (qlvl = 52, magic_lvl = 8), tiaras (qlvl = 70, magic_lvl = 13) and diadems (qlvl = 85, magic_lvl = 18). The magic_lvl allows for higher levels of affixes than the ilvl and qlvl would generally support.
alvl: Short for affix-level. Used to determine which affixes may spawn on an item, given ilvl, qlvl and magic_lvl.

ilvl of a crafted item is calculated by the following formula:

ilvl_craft = clvl/2 + ilvl_base/2

(Using integer calculations with fractions truncated.)

alvl (for any item, including crafted items) is calculated by the following piece of code:

if (ilvl>99) then {ilvl=99}

if (qlvl>ilvl) then {ilvl=qlvl}

if (magic_lvl>0) then {alvl=ilvl+magic_lvl}
else
{
if (ilvl<99-qlvl/2) then {alvl=ilvl-qlvl/2}
else {alvl=2*ilvl-99}
}

if (alvl>99) then {alvl=99}

(Using integer calculations with fractions truncated.)

Note: For rings and amulets (qlvl = 1) we can conclude, that alvl = ilvl.

Note: For circlets, coronets, tiaras and diadems we can conclude, that they will allways have a minimum alvl of qlvl+magic_lvl (circlets min alvl = 27, coronets min alvl = 60, tiaras min alvl = 83 and diadems min alvl = 99). Thus a diadem will allways have any affix available regardless of the ilvl.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Example: How do I calculate the clvl and ilvl required to craft a desired alvl?

Step 1: Determining the required ilvl to achieve a required affix-level.

Given the qlvl of the base-item to craft upon, we can rewrite the above code to:

(1) if alvl <= qlvl/2 then ilvl = qlvl [any ilvl<=qlvl is valid]

(2) if (1) is false then if alvl <= 98-qlvl then ilvl = alvl + qlvl/2

(3) if (1)+(2) are false then ilvl = (alvl + 99)/2

(Using integer calculations with fractions truncated.)

This code can allways be used to calculate required ilvl based on alvl and qlvl for any item.

For now, we will use the code to calculate the ilvl of a craft based on the desired alvl and the qlvl of the base-item.

Step 2: Determining the required ilvl, clvl to achieve a required affix-level.

To avoid confusion, let's define the following:
ilvl_craft: The desired ilvl of our crafted item - we have just calculated this in step (1)
ilvl_base: The item-level of the base item.

Item-level of crafted items is defined by the following formula:

ilvl_craft = clvl/2 + ilvl_base/2

(Using integer calculations with fractions truncated.)

Thus we have two ways of achieving the desired ilvl_craft calculated in step 1:
* We can adjust the character level (ie. craft with another char).
* We can adjuct the ilvl of the base item.

If we get the base-items from gambling (which is custumary), we have:

clvl - 5 <= ilvl_base <= clvl + 4

And coupling the two we get:

clvl - 3 <= ilvl_craft <= clvl + 2

So in order to craft items with item-level ilvl_craft (or higher), using gambled items as base, we need a character of level ilvl_craft + 3 (or higher).

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Example of a crafting situation using above calculations

Step 1:

The above example looks a bit complex, but it really is quite simple.
For instance - I may wan't to craft some Blood gloves with affixes of level 43 and below (alvl = 43).
Blood gloves can be Heavy Gloves (qlvl 7), Sharkskin Gloves (qlvl 39) or Vampirebone Gloves (qlvl 63).
By inserting these numbers, we get:

Heavy Gloves

(1) if 43 <= 3 (clearly a no)

(2) if 43 <= 91 (yep) so we have ilvl = 43 + 3 = 46 for Heavy Gloves.

Sharkskin Gloves

(1) if 43 <= 19 (clearly a no)

(2) if 43 <= 59 (yep) so we have ilvl = 43 + 19 = 62 for Sharkskin Gloves.

Vampirebone Gloves

(1) if 43 <= 31 (clearly a no)

(2) if 43 <= 35 (again a no)

(3) So we have ilvl = (43 + 99)/2 = 71 for Vampirebone Gloves.

Thus to get an affix-level of 43 on these 3 types of gloves, I will need:
* ilvl 46 Hevay Gloves
* ilvl 62 Sharkskin Gloves
* ilvl 71 Vampirebone Gloves

Step 2:

Remember that:
ilvl_craft = ilvl_base/2 + clvl/2

Assuming I have a level 50 character to do the crafting we get the following:
46 = ilvl_base/2 + 25 => ilvl_base = 42 or 43 [Heavy gloves]
62 = ilvl_base/2 + 25 => ilvl_base = 74 or 75 [Sharkskin gloves]
71 = ilvl_base/2 + 25 => ilvl_base = 92 or 93 [Vampirebone gloves]

So in order to craft blood gloves of alvl 43 with a level 50 char, I will need:
* Heavy gloves of ilvl 42 or 43
* Sharkskin gloves of ilvl 74 or 75
* Vampirebone gloves of ilvl 92 or 93

---

If on the other hand, I have access to say ilvl 90 magiv Heavy gloves, Sharkskin gloves and Vampirebone gloves, using again the above euation to calculate ilvl_craft, we get:
46 = 45 + clvl/2 => clvl = 2 or 3 [Heavy gloves]
62 = 45 + clvl/2 => clvl = 34 or 35 [Sharkskin gloves]
71 = 45 + clvl/2 => clvl = 52 or 53 [Vampirebone gloves]

So in order to craft blood gloves of alvl 43 using ilvl 90 gloves, I will need:
* A character of level 2 or 3 to craft Heavy Gloves
* A character of level 34 or 35 to craft Sharkskin Gloves
* A character of level 52 or 53 to craft Vampirebone Gloves

---

Now let's say, I choose to gamble the base-items used for crafting and craft with the same level character.
We found above, that a clvl of ilvl_craft + 3 will be required, thus we get:

In order to craft blood gloves of alvl 43 using gambled items, I need:
* A char of level 49 to gamble ilvl +44 base Heavy gloves and craft based on them.
* A char of level 65 to gamble ilvl +61 base Sharkskin gloves and craft based on them.
* A char of level 74 to gamble ilvl +69 base Vampirebone gloves and craft based on them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Important note:

Crafted items will allways have 3-4 fixed mods determined by the recipe. But on top of this crafted items are able to spawn up to 4 random affixes (though no more than 3 prefixes or 3 suffixes) based on the ilvl of the craft. The number of random affixes on crafts can be determined by:
* ilvls 1-30: 40% chance of 1 affix and a 20% chance each of 2, 3 or 4 affixes.
* ilvls 31-50: 60% chance of 2 affixes and a 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes.
* ilvls 51-70: 80% chance of 3 affixes and a 20% chance of 4 affixes.
* ilvls 71+: 100% chance of 4 affixes.

The ilvl used to calculate the number on affixes is the ilvl of the craft given by the formula:
ilvl_craft = clvl/2 + ilvl_base/2

(Using integer calculations with fractions truncated.)

Thus when creating low level crafts, there is a higher risk, that you will get few affixes.
Consider this when crafting.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Calculating the level requirement of a craft:

Affixes control the required level of the craft. The formula is rlvl = rlvl(of highest affix) +10 +3x (#of other affixes). So if you have a craft with 3 affixes and the highest affix has a required level (rlvl) of 12 your required level for that craft is 12 + 10 + 3*2 = 28. Since character level controls affix level and the # of affixes that can spawn it also controls the rlvl of the craft.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes:

* Crafted items cannot be etheral. If an etheral item is used to craft upon, the result will not be etheral.
* Crafted items get one socket by Larzuk.

This is my first attempt at making a crafting guide (since apparently no recent guide exists).

This (http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=473052) one explains the crafting mechanics, but does not tell which mods are good etc. I guide like yours would be helpful for sure :nod:

qlvl: Short for quality-level. Quality levels are normally hidden, but if you install ATMA V, you can read the files Armor.txt, Weapons.txt and Misc.txt from the directory ATMA V/ATMA_CONFIG/1.11 - qlvls of items are in the column labeled 'level'. Amulets and rings have qlvl = 1.

Arreat Summit has the item qlvls listed nowadays too.

ilvl: Short for item-level. For found items, ilvl is equal to the level of the monster, that dropped the item. For gambled items, the ilvl is within the range -5 to +4 of the character level.

...and the ilvl of shopped items is clvl+5 (some crafting supplies can be shopped for). IIRC normal difficulty has ilvl caps for vendors, so might not be smart to do shopping in there...

Also, unlike with rares, ilvl affects the number of affixes on the item. Using low item level to cut useless affixes off from the selection also means you will get the highest amount of affixes less likely.

At ilvls 1-30, there's a 40% chance of 1 affix and a 20% chance each of 2, 3 or 4 affixes.
At ilvls 31-50, there's a 60% chance of 2 affixes and a 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes.
At ilvls 51-70, there's an 80% chance of 3 affixes and a 20% chance of 4 affixes.
At ilvls 71+, there's a 100% chance of 4 affixes.

I didn't see you mentioning how the ilvl of the crafted item is calculated:

ilvl = int(.5 * clvl) + int(.5 * ilvl)

Excellent - thank you for an informative post :thumbup:.

Arreat Summit has the item qlvls listed nowadays too.

I did not know that - thank you for pointing that out. I will dig up a linky and include it as soon as I get off work (it's morning here now :coffee:).
{DONE - link added}

I allready knew this, by forgot to include it. Thanks again.
{DONE - ilvl for shops added and caps in normal included}

Again - thank you. I forgot to include that crucial piece of info.

I will include that.

Would you by any chance know, how the level requirement of a craft is calculated? I couldn't locate that information anywhere.

I tihnk you should make the blood amulet and safety amulet switch places, making safety amulet commonly used and blood amulet rarely used

Also caster rings being rarely used.

Life leech and mana leech on a crafted rings should probably also be very desirable

Will do that - I very rarely craft any amulets besides caster amulets and blood rings myself, so it is nice to get some input.

I thought about that but decided on 'Desirable' only.
If more people feel like you, I will of course change it.

These changes will be made when I come home from work. I'm allready very late, and the boss will probably tear my ears off.

The required lvl info is in the Uzziah's guide I linked.

The required lvl info is in the Uzziah's guide I linked.

Thank you once again.

Everything has now been cross-checked (several times!) with Uzziah's guide.
I think this guide should be completely correct now (and a bit more elaborate and readable than the original version) with regards to calculations on ilvls, clvls, alvls and qlvls.

Since this guide is intended to reflect the general views on crafting, some more input (negative or positive) will be highly appreciated.

With some help, I hope this guide will turn into a thread, that a couple of people will actually read and use :azn:.

Regards Tom

Actually, I think the only reason why people craft rings is to get either fcr or leech. Prismatic resist will then be icing on the cake.

This is really interesting. Unfortunately, I need time to make sense of it, and Im in a hurry, so I have a direct answer which needs a direct question, if possible:

Thing is I want to craft specifically just caster amulets, and I hope and aim for the best mods, ie the following:

20fcr
2 skills
30 str
20 dex
60 life
90 mana
20 all res or 40 individual res

Questions are the following:

(1) I have a level 91 character, should I level up to level 93?

(2) What minimum monster level I need to get magic amulets from? Or should I only use gambled ones?

(1) Get to 93. That way you can be sure that all your gambled amulets can be crafted to get +2 class skills prefix. (unless you play SP and can see the ilvl of the item via ATMA/GoMule, in which you can stockpile on gambled ammys, pick only those you can use, and sell the rest -- not too time efficient though)

(2) You need ilvl 88, which, IIRC, means you need mlvl 88. Far, FAR more time efficient to level to 93 and gamble the amulets.

Awesome post Thomas ty, crafting - or rather understanding the mechanics of crafting - is something i've never bothered to do before. But after reading your post and the replies i'm gonna have a play and see what rubbish i craft :).

And Ancalagon nice question, that pretty much summed up what i was going to ask :).

Great post.

+subscribe.

Personally, i would prefer lvl 80-83 to gamble and craft blood rings.

You can mention a link to it in the Statistics Forum Knowledge & Guide Library sticky or send a PM to melianor, so he adds it to posting #1 in there.

I don't think it should have its own sticky, else page 1 would be full of stickies about all kinds of statistical issues.
