Someone told me that if you put runewords in phase blades (as opposed to, say, a crystal sword) you have a higher chance of getting better mods. Is this true? I figure it's BS, but my friend did roll a 6 bo cta, coincidence? I've read here that diadems have special properties over circlets for spawning mods is the same thing true with phase blades and crystal swords?

it's false on the runewords; it's a random roll based on the runeword stats, no matter the base-item.
Diadems (and all circlet-types) have a special modifier that boosts the possible levels of their affixes. In the case of diadems, it's the highest boost, with tiara's being next-highest, coronets being a little lower than that, and circlets being the lowest. There are other factors too, such as the item quality level (qlvl). So, it is true that Diadems have "special properties over circlets".
<--- but, this "boost" and these rules do not apply to Phase Blades & Crystal Swords; this situation only really applies to circlet-types.
