View Full Version : Infinity Conviction doesn't break Lightning Enchanted Nihlithak; Why?

I recently got an Infinity polearm for a lightning sorc, and was giving it a whirl in hell. I came across a lightning enchanted lightning immune nihlithak, and noticed my Level 12 conviction aura (-85% Resist) wouldn't break his immunity.

Looking at the arreat summit monster stats, it shows Hell Nihlithak has a base LightRes of 33% (The 1.11 data files included with atma confirm this), and that a lightning enchanted monster gets +75% lightning resist bonus. He did not appear to have any "bonuses" such as magic resistant, so based on this information I concluded that he should have 33 + 75 = 108% LightRes.

Level 12 conviction operating at 20% efficiency should provide -17% to enemy resists. That should be enough to break a 108% immunity, but it didn't.

So my question is, why not?

The possibilities I see are
A) He doesn't really have a base resist of 33%, and Arreat summit and the 1.11 data files are wrong / outdated.
B) Lightning enchantment doesn't really boost lightning resist by 75%, but some greater amount.
C) Is there a "Lightning Immune" mod that a monster can actually receive on top of the Lightning Enchanted mod?
D) Some other hidden mod was giving him a bonus to lightning resistance.

Any ideas from anyone with more experience with breaking immunities?

afaik 1.11 and 1.12 are the same monster-wise

Was he spectral hit?

Spectral Hit:

Fire Resist: +20%
Lightning Resistance: +20%
Cold Resistance: +20%
Chance to Hit: x2
Pick from Fire, Lightning, Magic, Cold, and Poison and do:
Element Minimum Hit: +66% damage
Element Maximum Hit: +100% damage
In Nightmare and Hell, Minions gain +33-50% random elemental damage.

Total would be 128 LR, unbreakable

Not to mention, Lighting Enchanted doesn't deal with res, and won't be broken/taken away because of infinity ; )

I don't think he had spectral hit, but I don't 100% remember anymore, I thought he had just light enchanted and no other mods, but spectral isn't something I was thinking about at the time either. I'm sure I'll run into it again so I'll pay closer attention to that.

Regarding the LE mod itself, I'm not trying to remove his lightning enchantment, just the resist component that enchantment brings (and the lightning immune effect that it generates). Even if that 75% was somehow untouchable by conviction, I think I should have been able to lower his 33% base component.

AFAIK spectral hit won't add to resists if they are already beyond 100%, but I'm not sure about it. There are two possibilities:

1. The Infinity wielder wasn't close enough to Nihlathak
2. Conviction wasn't active on your merc because he died recently (which causes auras from the weapon to deactivate) and you didn't unequip and equip it to reactivate the aura

OK, I just ran into another one that was only Lightning Enchanted, and Cold Enchanted, and conviction successfully broke the immunity.

I wield the infinity myself (merc has an insight cv), and the conviction aura was definitely hitting nihlithak the first time (spent about a minute down there messing around with him, saw it show up on him).

The most likely conclusion is my limited observatory skills not noticing the Spectral Hit mod, as I wasn't thinking about that at the time (and thus likely to not notice it) since it seems to be the only other mod that can increase lightning resistance, unless there is some hidden "lightning immune +100%" mod that I haven't read about.

So either weird sync bug, or me simply not noticing an additional resistance mod, seems this is case closed. Thanks for the feedback. :)

There's also the magic resistant mod (40% fire+lightning+cold res). Perhaps it depends on the order at which the mods are determined, so if magic resistance or spectral hit is rolled first and lightning enchantment second, it might be possible to get unbreakable lightning res in rare cases. Whatever, that's when the merc comes into play...
