You're gonna need some way to take out fire immunes in hell. Also fire is pretty much the most resisted/immunifed damage type in the whole game you will especially notice it in act 4 where you will spend a lot of time. Meteor does half physical on the strike but getting it to hit can be a pain since you won't have a nice sturdy merc there keeping all the bad guys still for you and getting hit a lot is not recommended.
also fire sorc covers a lot of ground. firewall, fireball, meteor and enchant are all options. Additionally you will have to decide if you are going to use ES and if so how many of your valuable skill points (its harder by far to get past 75 in classic) you will dump into it if you do.
IF I were to make a sorc for classic I would probably do max orb and cm and put the rest into mostly static and cl. for my defense I'd try to keep resists as high as possible and go with max block or near max with something like a rare bone shield with deflection or even a tower shield if there are other highish str items you plan to wear and it wouldnt cost you many more stat points.
I guess if I really really wanted to do fire I would go with an enchant/warmth build with raven claw bow (pretty easily found) since it fires explosive arrows and the explosion includes your enchant damage. nice thing about that build is that it also is very easy on the mana. just use orb when you get to things aren't dying fast enough to your fire and the rest of the time shoot arrows of fiery doom.

Meteor does half physical on the strike
Wait..... What???
Anyways, that aside, unless you plan on running just bosses, and have someone to help you through Hell (or a very good Merc) I wouldn't recommend a Fire Sorc. They can be fun, but there is too many FI's and while you can just port by them, you run into to many that its annoying to, I am also mainly thinking of Lister and co.
So unless you are going to specialize in certain areas, I wouldn't bother.
I've had a couple fire sorcs and they did well. Telerporting to someone's face and spamming fb's all over the place is fun. :) Making an effective fire sorc requires more wealth than making an orb sorc for instance; but starting from a scratch is also doable, your playstyle just has to be a bit different.
A Good thing with fire sorcs is that they pack lots of damage and they have extra skill points to play with when compared to blizzard for example. (Not as many as orbers but fire sorcs do more damage.) You can have a better energy shield and low mana cost tele for instance.
Merc killing immunes takes only an obedience polearm and threachery. Runes for those are kinda easy to come by. :)

hmmmm... I could be mistaken about meteor doing
physical damage since I havent played frequently for about 5 years. If so I apologize.
Still he DID specify that he is going to play in REGULAR diablo II not LOD. So telling him what kind of merc and runewords to use is probably not going to help him.
Oops... and I though "reg diablo 2" is classic. :)
thanks guys for your help i will prob give the fire sorc a try whats about a fire sorc on the ex pac ?
