View Full Version : runes getting dumbed down?

It bothers me that in the d3 wiki I see some of the lesser items being named stuff like lesser power rune and greater energy rune. Not giving them the nonsensical one syllable names takes away the mystique of them.

Yup. The D2 rune names are cooler and better. Why have they changed it? :(
I always found the runes confusing, maybe they're simplifying them for our convenience. The names were interesting but the combination of runes into rune words doesn't seem to apply from what we've seen from the demonstration game play video. Unless adding a Power rune and a Vitality rune to a sword create a Powerful Sword of Vitality...

I like the old system where you can become a better trader and player over time as you learn the general order of the runes, their values, and their mods.
Keep in mind that runes, runewords, charms, and jewels, along with circlets and elite items and all the higher level item sets and dozens of new uniques were all added in D2X. None of them existed in D2C. Expansions always add additional features, which adds complexity and variety to a game.
Even if Blizzard has all of those type of things in mind for D3, they're not going to put them all into the initial retail release since 1) they want to save some cool stuff to entice us to buy the expansion, and 2) too much stuff at once can overwhelm with complexity, and 3) it would take much longer in development to balance in all that stuff.

If Rune Words and Horadric Cube Formulae were learned in game or viewable in game, it would work a lot better.
