So when someone refers to drops being better on player 5 what do they mean by player 5?

For single player (and tcp/ip, maybe also open B.Net) you can set the amount of players in the game by entering /players X as a message (where X is 1-8). This simulates there being more players in the game than there actually are.

The monsters will provide experience and drops as though there were X players in the game (the extra players count as unpartied players), and will likewise have increased hit points and damage.
