i keep seeing people talking about keys/dkeys all over the place but this term isn't listed in the diablo dictionary. they seem very important so they can't be talking about regular old keys to open locked chests. what are they?

They are part of the Uber Tristam quest. If you're playing on Bnet you'll want to read up on the subject.

There is tkeys (terror), hkeys (hate), & dkeys (destruction); they are found only at hell level by killing the countess (act 1), Summoner (act 2) & Nitahlik (act 5), not sure on the spelling on that last one. The aim is to find 3 each of these keys to enable you to complete the Uber Tristram quest, this is where you get your hands on the elusive torch you may have heard of. You've probably seen games called Ztorch for Ptorch or the like. Just google "Uber Trsitram" and u are bound to find out all about it

HKeys, TKeys, and DKeys are the first step to Uber Tristam, like many have said.

The majority of B.Net values DKeys the most, simply because of the difficulty of the combination of getting to Nihlathak, Corpse Explosion, and Vipers. I myself am confused at why this is so, since the Vaughts have a set number of maps, and Nature's Peace easily stops Corpse Explosion. At the start of ladder you can usually get 3 and even 4 H/TKeys for 1 DKey, but at the moment it seems more people are doing 2 H/TKeys for 1 DKey.

so i assume this is for ladder characters only?

This applies to non-ladder as well
