I think you should make the topic in the diablo 1 subforum.

Diablo one had much beter graphics and music, but the lack of ability to run makes the game unplayable. In addition, it was quite repetitive, as there are only few multiplayer quests; diablo2 allows for much more variety - but completely lacks atmosphere.

diablo 2 has no story. no one cares about the quests and stuff in d2. its very boring. where as with diablo 1, i was excited to read the books and story plots. it just never was the same for diablo 2.

diablo 2 is too much about rushing and not about questing at all. which i dont like and makes d2 get boring fast. but d1's problems like no run and drop highlighter and less size as d2 ruins it, but of course it was the first.....so of course it lacks all the new developments of newer games.

small edit by me:

in game, d2 is boring quest wise. the cinematics are awesome though.

diablo 1's story/plot is awesome both in game and cinematics (i think d1 has some cinematics...)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
the topic is d1 vs d2....kinda hard to determine whether the thread belongs in d2 forum or d1 forum with it being 50 50 :P

I actually find the athmosphere in D2 quite enjoyable. Ofc, the difference from D1 is huge, but nothing I would write as having no story at all..

I tried playing Diablo I a couple years after Diablo II was released.
I couldn't figure out how to get out of the town for an hour. When I found a dungeon entrance, the monsters killed me.
Thus ended my playing Diablo I.

You're right: There is no story. Certainly not the least of which is a story about the hero from the first game becoming the demon he had slain, freeing the demon's demon brothers and releasing Hell upon the world. (spoiler: we fail to stop them)

I got into Diablo II because of the story and stayed for the character building.

compared to d1, d2 has no story. u have to have played d1 to understand this feeling though.

d1 has a much darker atmosphere and story. it feels more like how the game diablo should be.

and for that matter, on the 2nd level of d1 is a super unique monster called the butcher...who actually killed most people easily until u skip him and level a good bit of levels higher than come back to THAN finally be able to kill him.

d2 just doesn't compare to the environment and story of d1.

I have played D1, played it with my friend via 33k modem..I see where you are coming from; just that I think your statement on D2 having NO story was a bit over the top..that, or I have an incredibly good imagination. The best act story- and athmosphere-wise is the Act5 in LOD though :scratchchin:

What is this supposed to mean?
Seriously, is this some sort of flame bait?

How was it a proof of noobness? I just wanted to see peoples opinions on the games.

Maakari was answering Fledgeling's question, not commenting on the OP(you).

It's this heat I tell you, drives people batty.

Speaking of bats, who doesn't remember those Succubi with their most prominent feature being their bat wings ?

I vaguely remember making tp's for people inside Diablo's closed "container", but perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me.

Seriously, is this some sort of flame bait? It means: I couldn't figure out how to get out of the town for an hour. When I found a dungeon entrance, the monsters killed me. The town was enclosed and I couldn't get out. After clicking on every NPC for help and searching nooks, I finally found an entrance to a dungeon or a cellar. I went down and met a group of monsters which promptly beat my character to a bloody pulp and followed me back to the entrance. I couldn't beat them in-game, so I uninstalled FTW.
Also: That was proof of noobness. (:

Yeah, I can see that, after having played Diablo 2 for years, one would be looking for the exit of Tristram on the outside. How does that work with the shortcuts again, like the fissure, they aren't clickable until you've been all the way down, right ?
That would indeed leave only one clickable exit, that church.

Did you find Wirt by the way ?

Diablo 1 is very fun. And very short. When you play through normal mode, you've seen just about all there is to see though, items included. There are no exceptional or elite items period, which hurts the gear dependant warrior the most in later difficulties. The atmosphere is great though. It has "bad" items (items with -stats, -light radius, -mana etc), and "bad" monsters (like Black Deaths, who permanently remove 1 hp when they hit you), which with combined with the atmosphere and no ability to run, makes for a pretty good pseudo survival action game. There are a few lasting qualities, such as beating normal/nightmare/hell, leveling to 50, and book finding. But in my opinion they're all pretty minor compared to Diablo 2, which has magic finding and PVP. The classes in Diablo 1 are horribly imbalanced to the sorcerers favor too, more so than D2.

Diablo 2 stands out in its longevity, but fails in the areas of atmosphere, story, or that feeling of "survival" the original game had. Diablo 2 is better over all though due to its lasting MF/PVP qualities. I think I would be playing D1 more than D2 if it had more items, an actual party/PVP system, less hacks, no overly simple dupe methods, and various other little tweaks.
