If you look really closely at the Blizzard quotes, you see that they say there may be yet another class from d2 showing up in d3. They say "classes" (plaural) when discussing more old chrs like barb crossing over to d3 classes. So that means, there MAY be at least 2 old chrs, and that leaves only 3 new classes.

Have a feeling theyll keep the assassin

They'll (most likely) keep the Amazon and Sorceress (maybe rename them) and hopefully they'll implement a completely new and original class altogether

Frankly, I'm a bit sad to see the Diablo tradition gone. The tradition I'm talking about is how they would start fresh with all new hero classes (going form d1 to d2 then LoD). I know, 2 games is not much of a pattern, but I was expecting all the d3 classes to be completely new ideas. I guess there was immense pressure to keep a few favorites from d2 since people love those chrs so much. Or, maybe they can't come up with enough new class ideas. In any case, I hope they can blow us away with at least one or two purely original, never-used-before character ideas. It's hard, but hey, it's Blizzard.

I hear you stillman, I have high hopes for new classes

They can't keep Amazons specifically. Seeing as Amazons are women warriors, you can't have a male Amazon. There might be a hunter/ranger class type but it definitely won't be named Amazon. :P
i sure hope they bring new classes, rather than old ones..
sure, i like playing my sorc, as well as i liked playing my warrior.. so i guess, i'll like playing my what-so-ever as well :)
money is on 3 new classes 2 old.
Old being sorcerer, and barbarian.
New being WD, a holy archetype to replace the paladin/have and a ranged character that specializes in bows / knives.
Just seems the most logical to me.

When there only were three classes in D1 we had
Melle - Warrior
Ranged - Rogue
Mage - Sorc
The fourth archetype is the healer and it was never added into D1 because it doesn't make for a good character in an action oriented game.
In D2 they kept the 3 archetypes
Melle - Barbarian
Ranged - Amazon
Mage - Sorc
But also added
Summoner - Necro
Support - Paladin
and later fleshed it out with
Shapeshifter - Druid
Rogue - Assa
So if we go simply by that formula we can pretty much conclude that the following will be in D3
Melle - Barb (confirmed)
Ranged - ? (unconfirmed)
Mage - ? (unconfirmed)
Summoner - WD (confirmed)
Support ? (unconfirmed
ranged? Amazon, Rogue or a Hunter etc.
mage? Sorc, Wizard or warlock etc.
support? Paladin, priest, shaman or bard etc.
In D2 expansion they added two classes that overlapped a bit. Assa was also melle viable and druid was also a summoner. Therefor, it's definatly not outruled that we will see the Necromancer in an expansion even though he shares the summoning playstyle. I wouldn't expect it, but it's possible.

Right now I would probably roll with the Barbarian, looks so overpowered now with so many moves. Im sure that will change though before release. Oh and by the way melle is spelled melee no biggie though!

Heh, I spelled it melle and pronounced it melle for as long as I can remember and no one ever commented on it. Lol, thanks for the heads up =D I guess it has to do with me coming from Sweden and english is my second language. Now I'm gonna make fun of my friends next time they say melle and call them nubs.

You can only have so much archetypes. Sooner or later you have overlap. The "secret" is to make each class in a specific archetype play completely different. The assassin had chargeups, turrets, a powerful summon. All of that make for a very different gameplay experience as the barb.
But before Blizzard adds new classes to existing archetypes, I am sure they will first fill ATM empty archetypes.
